Sri Lankans were accused of changing the condition of the ball during the St Lucia Test against Windies. All the SL players staged the protest by refusing to take the field on the third day’s play. The protest continued for two hours. Consequently, the umpires changed the ball and added five penalty runs on the board, taking Windies overnight score from 118/2 to 123/2.

“The ICC can confirm the match officials in the second Test between Windies and Sri Lanka changed the ball and awarded 5 penalty runs to West Indies,” the ICC later tweeted. “If there are any, Code of Conduct charges will follow as per usual at the close of play.” The Sri Lankan Cricket Board also sent a statement defending its players.

Coming into the third day’s play after the two-hour controversial delay, Devon Smith and Shai Hope entered the crease before the latter getting out to Suranga Lakmal for 19 runs. However, Devon Smith failed to make his half-century a big one as he faltered for 61 runs off Akila Dananjaya.

Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich added a valuable 78-run partnership for the fifth wicket before the former departed off Lahiru Kumara. Shane went onto register his half-century but couldn’t make it big and got out for 55 runs. The Windies tail didn’t last longer as they added just 46 runs for the last four wickets. Kasun Rajitha with three wickets and Lahiru Kumara with four scalps are Lankans pick of the bowlers.

Windies got a small but important lead of 57 runs in the first innings. Sri Lankan openers came out to the middle in sight of adding a target above 200 runs, which means a tougher chase for Windies in the fourth innings. However, Kusal Perera couldn’t stay for a long time as he got out for 20 runs off Shannon Gabriel.

At the end of day’s play, Lankans added 34 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket, trailing Windies score by 13 runs. Sri Lankans will aim to score big in the third innings and level the series with one more game to go.
