Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal was handed over a two-match ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for ball-tampering in the 2nd Test of the series. Though Chandimal pleaded not guilty and there was a whole lot of drama on and off the field, match referee Javagal Srinath found him guilty and thus imposed the sanction.

Thus, the Sri Lankan team that is desperate to secure a win on the tour will now have to play under a new captain. The third and final match of the series is scheduled to get underway later today at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. Sri Lanka Cricket thus announced the captain of the team in Chandimal’s absence.

It is fast bowler Suranga Lakmal who will take charge as skipper the 3rd Test and try to ensure they level the series 1-1. This will be the first occasion when Lakmal leads the team in a Test match and he will want to make a memorable captaincy debut.

Further, Chandimal, team head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe and manager Asanka Gurusinha admitted to a level 3 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct. Their decision to not take field which delayed the start of the day’s play by a couple of hours was termed “contrary to the spirit of the game” by the ICC.

The series thus far

Sri Lanka landed into the Caribbean looking for their first Test win since 2008, they had a good enough warmup game against the Windies XI but that didn’t reflect in the 1st Test. Jason Holder’s team batted first and ended their innings on 418/8d, the visitors in response could only manage 189 runs. Windies bettered the target by adding another 223 runs and declaring the second innings. Being asked to chase 452 runs all the Lankans managed was half of it and lost the match by 226 runs.

Dinesh Chindimal’s team batted a lot better in the second Test however with so much time lost by rain delay and their own decisions to not take field kept them 5 wickets from a possible win. With the last Test, Sri Lanka can grab a Test match win on Caribbean soil and level the series but they will have to do that without Chandimal and under the leadership of Lakmal.
