Team India is currently sitting pretty at the top of the Test rankings with 125 rating points. They are enjoying a healthy lead of 19 points thanks to South Africa losing the two-match series against Sri Lanka after which they lost seven points. The much-awaited five-match Test series between India and England is all set to commence on August 1 and the result of this contest is likely to have a lot of bearing on the rankings.

The visitors are set to stay at the pinnacle of the rankings even if they lose by 5-0 to England. They will lose 13 points and come down to 112 in this case and their opponents will rise to the second spot by trumping South Africa. The Brits will have 106 points to their name if they managed to whitewash India. Contrastingly, if Virat Kohli‘s team wins the series by 5-0, they will increase the gap between them and the second-placed Proteas to 23 points and England will be dropped to the sixth position.

What about other possibilities?

If the Test series ends in a draw, then India will lose 5 points and England will earn 3 points as there will be no changes in the rankings. In case, the hosts manage to thump the opposition by 3-2 in a hard-fought contest, they will climb to the fourth position with 103 points and go past New Zealand who will stay at 102 points and are not scheduled to play Tests until September at least.

However, they will be able to go past their arch-rivals Australia only if they clean sweep the Indian team who are unlikely to go down without putting up a fight. If England loses, the series by 5-0 or 4-1, then they will definitely drop below Sri Lanka to the sixth position with only 94 points to their name.

More than the rankings, the pressure will be on the visitors to improve their performance in the country. They have lost by 3-1 and 4-0 during their recent visits to the United Kingdom in 2014 and 2011 respectively.
