Bangladesh are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against the Windies. The first ODI will be played at Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 22. The visitors lost the Test series with a couple of thumping defeats and will be keen to make a statement in the limited-overs leg of the tour. However, they were jolted with a body blow when it was learned that Mashrafe Mortaza may not play the series.

Minhajul Abedin, Bangladesh’s chief-selector, previously mentioned that the Norail Express, popularly called by his fans, was unlikely to make the cut owing to his sick wife Sumona Haque Shumi. He played his last international match way back in January against Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, Bangladesh have all the more reasons to rejoice as the all-rounder is now certain to join the team ahead of the ODI series.

He has got great leadership skills

The chief-selector shared the news on Monday, which is definitely going to be a massive development in the visiting team’s bid to make amends in their fortunes on the tour. ”Mashrafe is expected to leave tonight. Apparently, his wife’s condition is quite stable at present that prompted him to join the squad,” Abedin was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Abedin also hailed Mortaza’s prowess as a cricketer. ”Naturally, his presence will have a big impact on the morale of the team. He has got great leadership skills and it can play a big part in transforming the mindset of the team,” he added.

Bangladesh will play a practise match against UWI Vice Chancellor’s XI on July 19 prior to the ODI matches. The second and third ODI will be played on June 25 and 28 in Guyana and St Kitts respectively. The teams will then lock horns in a three-match T20I series, which gets underway on July 31 at Warner Park, Basseterre in St Kitts.
