With Dalmiya at the top will Ganguly return to team India as the Director?: The 20th of May has all of a sudden turned into an interesting day, as it is learnt that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not only announce the team that has been picked for the series in Bangladesh but there are expected to be a few changes in the team management as well. Ravi Shastri who until the World Cup was the Team Director, might well have to pay the price of being a loyalist of the former BCCI President N Srinivasan. A report in the Hindustan Times suggests that former Indian captain and Dalmiya’s close aid Sourav Ganguly might take over from Shastri as the team director.
The tabloid quoted a BCCI source saying: “The president (Dalmiya) believes Shastri has been pro-Srinivasan. He does not see Shastri as a long-term member of the team. He is very keen on having Sourav Ganguly as a part of the national setup, “Dalmiya believes Shastri has not delivered the results too.”
Sourav’s overseas record as the Indian captain and his image of being a leader are both pushing his chances further. Team India which will now be led by a young Virat Kohli will need someone as solid as Sourav to guide him through, when the team faces situations they have never seen before.
“Ganguly knows how to win abroad. He is India’s most successful captain away from home. Shastri has not got us the results we wanted, so we could ask Ganguly to step in, “It is unlikely Shastri will go to Bangladesh, so he could go back to his media commitments.” the BCCI source added.
Though there is a possibility that the Board might not be able to sign in Ganguly in time for the Bangladesh tour which starts in the first week of June, in that case Shastri might continue his job for an extended series. But he is surely not seen as a long term prospect by the BCCI Top Brass.
