The 2019-20 season of the Women’s Big Bash League witnessed another day of action-packed encounters. In the first game of the triple-header Saturday in the rebel league, Perth Scorchers Women squared off against Sydney Sixers Women at the Lilac Hill Park in Perth.

The Scorchers consolidated their position at the third spot in the points table after they registered a comfortable 52-run-win over the Sydney Sixers in what turned out to be a pretty one-sided encounter in Perth. The Scorchers batted first and as usual their each of the batters of their batting unit contributed to the final total. Skipper Meg Lanning scored a run-a-ball 28 before she was run-out by Lauren Smith.

Lanning’s wicket meant the Scorchers were reeling at 3-67 but Natalie Sciver’s 37-ball 52 innings which included seven fours- and an unbeaten 14-ball 25 by Heather Graham meant the Western Australia-based franchise racked up an eventual match-winning total of 5-152. Marizanne Kapp (2-27) was the pick of the bowlers for the Sixers.

Chasing 153, Sydney Sixers never really got going in their innings as they lost wickets at regular intervals, and it was only Marizanne Kapp (19) and Lauren Smith (36 not out) who put up any sort of resistance against an all-round bowling performance by the Perth Scorchers bowlers before they were eventually restricted to 9-100; 52 runs adrift of the target.

In the second fixture of the WBBL, Melbourne Stars Women finally had something to smile as they registered their second win of the tournament in their 11th game.

Anna Lanning’s swashbuckling 49-ball 73, an innings which included eight fours and a couple of sixes- went in vain as the Stars successfully chased down the target of 166 thanks to an all-round batting performance- well and truly spearheaded by Lizelle Lee’s 46-ball 62 and ably supported by Mignon du Preez’s 32-ball 41 and an unbeaten 15-ball 34 by Erin Osborne.

Lea Tahuhu (2-26) was the only one that could create any sort of impact as the Stars romped past home in 19.2 overs.

Chloe Tyron whirlwind 44 in vain as Strikers claim a two-run win

The third game of the day saw Adelaide Strikers Women lock horns against the women from Hobart Hurricanes at the Bellerive Oval.

Batting first, the superstar opening duo of Suzie Bates (64) and Sophie Devine (31) once again got the Strikers to a blazing start as they racked up 85 runs for the first wicket in just 12 overs. However, Nicole Carey (1-31) and Heather Knight (1-22) pulled the breaks on the scoring in the middle-overs to ensure that the Strikers could only manage 3-143 after 20 overs.

Chasing 144, the Hurricanes got off to a worst possible start when they lost both of their openers- Erin Fazackerley and Fran Wilson- in the first three overs. Heather Knight (22) and Nicola Carey (22) chipped in with valuable contributions but it was really the partnership between Corinne Hall (25) and Chloe Tyron that put the Hurricanes back into the reckoning.

Amanda Wellington landed a body blow to the Hurricanes when she snapped both Hall and Sasha Moloney (4) in a single over. But Chloe Tyron kept Hurricane afloat by smoking Bates for a six and a boundary on successive deliveries before laying into Amanda Wellington in the penultimate over, to reduce the target down to 11 runs off the final over.

But the Strikers kept their cool in the final over and landed what turned out to be a killer blow to the Hurricanes when they ran out Maisy Gibson leaving Tyron stranded at 44 to eventually seal a 2-run win.
