A Women’s cricket team in Australia scored a whopping total of 596/3 in 50 overs before bowling out their opponent at just 25 runs in 10.5 overs. The team batting first hence secured a massive 571-run victory, in what can be categorized as one of the most emphatic all-round displays in cricket.
This festival of runs took place during the match between Northern Districts and Port Adelaide in the SACA PC Statewide Super Women’s 1st Grade match, a regional women’s cricket league in Australia. As many as 4 players from the winning team scored hundreds to pile up the humongous total.
For the Northern Districts, Tegan McPharlin, Sam Betts, Tabitha Saville and Darcie Brown scored a century each. The side was almost able to maintain a run-rate of 12 runs throughout the first innings en route the astonishing total of 596.
McPharlin was the top-scoring batter for the Northern Districts, as she slammed 130 runs from 80 balls with Betts coming in next with an unbeaten 124 off 71. Saville’s innings though had the best strike rate – she raced to a 56-ball 120. The fourth ton came from Brown who remained unbeaten on 117 from 84 balls.
Only 3 sixes in the entire innings!
The bulk of the runs were scored in from boundaries, but curiously, there were only a total of 3 sixes struck in the entire innings. However, the Districts sent the ball as many as 64 times to the fence. They were also aided by some very wayward bowling by Port Adelaide, who gave away a total of 88 extras, including 75 wides.
Speaking after the landslide victory, top-scorer McPharlin said to local media, “It’s pretty cool that, at the end of the day, we potentially have a world record. It’s pretty unreal to make a total like that. At the time, we weren’t chasing any records or trying to set any benchmarks in that way. We were just playing cricket shots.”
“The runs just kept piling on. There were only three sixes hit for the entire day for us. It just shows that we were willing to run between the wickets and hit along the ground and actually play proper cricket,” she added.
The Northern Districts women’s cricket director Jeanette Beazleigh also said after the freak game of cricket, “A few of us were wondering if it was a world record or whatever – it’s definitely a club record and we’re pretty sure it’s a SACA (SA Cricket Association) record.”
