The ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 gets underway on March 4 with the hosts New Zealand and the West Indies locking horns in the curtain-raiser at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. Meanwhile, the Mithali Raj-led Team India would kickstart their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan at the same venue on March 6. England are the defending champions, having edged past India by nine runs in a thrilling grand finale in 2017 at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The showpiece event was originally scheduled to be held from February 6 to March 7, 2021, but, had to be postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The one-month long tournament will see eight teams compete for the coveted trophy in a total of 31 matches including the knockouts across six venues including Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington respectively. The first semi-final will be played at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on March 30 while the other semifinal and the final would be contested at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on 31 and April 3 respectively,

The upcoming Women’s World Cup could be the swansong of many big names in women’s cricket including the likes of captain Mithali Raj and veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami and they would be hoping to lay their hands on the biggest prize this time around after many unsuccessful attempts.
