English county side Worcestershire has secured the services of Proteas all-rounder Wayne Parnell as their overseas player for the remainder of their T20 Blast campaign. Parnell, who will be at Blackfinch New Road till September, comes in as a replacement for Travis Head. Head was originally scheduled to remain until mid-September but has now been selected for Australia’s ‘A’ team tour of India from early August.

The South African will be available for the conclusion of the Vitality Blast and a block of four Specsavers County Championship matches. Parnell is slated to feature in the final six Vitality Blast North Group matches, alongside fellow overseas player Callum Ferguson and, should the Rapids qualify, the knockout stages of the T20 competition including finals day. He is currently playing for Edmonton Royals in the Global T20 competition in Canada and also in his country’s domestic competitions for the Cobras.

Worcestershire head coach speaks about the new signing

Excited with the deal, Worcestershire head coach Kevin Sharp said, “With the injuries, we’ve had in the bowling department, and Travis leaving earlier than we anticipated, we wanted to make sure we had the resources to have all corners covered right through the remainder of the season.”

He added, “Wayne is a quality performer and proven at international level, a top-notch bowler.”

A clinical signing for Worcestershire

Capable both with the bat and ball, Parnell has previously played in English county as an overseas player for Kent and Sussex. Parnell had a successful spell with Kent and went on to earn his Test breakthrough against England in January 2010.

The 28-year-old is a proven performer and with his previous exposure, Parnell will be bringing in a lot of experience into the camp. With six Tests, 65 ODIs and 40 T20Is for the Proteas, the all-rounder boasts of a rich repertoire of tricks up his sleeve and can be extremely clinical in winning matches.
