Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been re-signed by Worcestershire for their last two games in the 2018 County Championships. The Tamil Nadu bowler will be replacing South African Wayne Parnell as the county’s overseas player for the matches against Essex at Chelmsford and Yorkshire at Blackfinch New Road. He will join Worcestershire after India’s Test series against England starting August 1.

Ashwin had an impressive outing last season after he was roped in for the final four championship games. He excelled not just with the ball, taking 20 wickets including two five-wicket hauls but also with the bat, averaging 42. He also had a memorable time in the dressing room with his teammates and was heard saying that his memories in the dressing room will be forever cherished.

Ashwin to make a return

Worcestershire wanted to see Ashwin rerun with his impressive form and persona this year as well but had to wait for a long time before receiving a confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Matt Rawnsley, a former Worcestershire spinner who was appointed as their CEO earlier this year, praised Ashwin, 31, for his last year’s performance and welcomed his return.

“We are delighted to have Ashwin coming back for what could be a key part of the season. He is one of the best spinners in world cricket and the influence he had when here last season cannot be underestimated. The lads all speak so highly of him, the impact he had on the field and the way he slotted in so well off the pitch and he was willing to offer advice to our young spinners like Ben Twohig,” Rawnsley was quoted saying.

Ashwin will also be one of India’s high hopes in the Test series if the team management decides to stick with him in the playing XI. He has taken 316 wickets in 58 Tests at an average of 25.34.
