Australia Women’s team captain Meg Lanning will be missing out the team’s next fixture against Pakistan in the Women’s World Cup 2017 on Wednesday due to an injury. Lanning, who has been playing with a shoulder injury in the tournament has decided to rest in this game to ensure she is fitter as we approach the business end of the tournament. Australia will play their next game against their arch-rivals England on Sunday, and the skipper is expected to feature in that match.

Left-hander Rachael Haynes will be replacing Lanning in this game and will lead the team, while the vice-captain Alex Blackwell will continue to act as the deputy. Haynes didn’t find a spot for herself in the first 3 matches of their campaign and when she features in the game against Pakistan; she will become the 17th ODI captain for Australia Women.

Chronic injury

Meg has been undergoing rehabilitation on her right shoulder, following a chronic injury.” Australian team physiotherapist Kate Mahony said. “The decision for Meg to miss today’s match will enable her to focus on some rehabilitation and we’ll continue to monitor her ahead of taking part in any further matches in the tournament,” she was quoted by cricket.com.au.

Australia have won the three games they have played against Windies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. They will be facing England, India and South Africa in the presence of their regular skipper Lanning, who has scored 212 runs; the third highest run-getter in the tournament so far.

As she misses the game, Lanning’s 52 consecutive ODI streak for Australia Women comes to an end. Only Julia Price (66), Belinda Clarke (61) and Alex Blackwell (56) have featured in more ODIs on a trot for Australia Women. She made her ODI debut in 2011 and has featured in 60 matches thus far out of the 62 games Australia Women have played in this duration.

The 2012 home series against New Zealand is the only ODI fixture she missed in her career for Australia. Even in the T20I format, Lanning has played 70 matches out of the 73 games Australia have played till date since her debut in late 2010.
