Younis Khan is the leading run-scorer for Pakistan in Tests. The batsman is one of the best produced by Pakistan. While talking about this player, something which people often forget is that he is one of the only two World Cup-winning captains in the history of Pakistan cricket.
The Mardan-born player carried that Pakistan team into ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009 triumph. This was the country’s first world title since 1992 when Imran Khan had led the team to a World Cup win.
However, Younis was removed from captaincy merely six months after the World Cup. It was later revealed in several ways that some players in the dressing room had issues with Younis being the leader.
Younis Khan feels it was his honesty which cost him the job
Talking about his captaincy tenure with the national side, Younis said that it was his honesty which made him lose the job. He revealed that there was a group of players who weren’t as committed as a captain like him would want.
“You often face a situation in life where if you speak the truth, you are considered as a madman. My fault was pointing out to a group of players that they were not pushing themselves hard enough for the country,” Younis said while speaking to Gulf News.
The batsman also made a point that he later made up with these players. He recalled that his father had taught him to always stay humble and be honest.
“The players were, however, regretful later and we played for teammates long enough after that. I know I had nothing wrong for it’s a lesson that I had learnt from my father – to always speak the truth and always remain humble,” Younis said.
The right-handed batsman turned out to be a driving force for the men in green towards the end of his career. The 42-year-old retired from international cricket in 2017 after playing for Pakistan for 17 long years.
During this time, Younis Khan had played 118 Tests scoring 10099 runs at an average of 52.06. He scored as many as 34 centuries and 33 half-centuries in the format. Apart from this, the man also played 265 ODIs scoring 7249 runs with seven centuries and 34 half-centuries.
