Although Dinesh Karthik hasn’t been able to do much talking with his on-field performance lately, his show with the microphone in hand has been the talk of the town. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman made his commentary debut in the recently-concluded ICC World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand. In his maiden assignment, Karthik impressed one and all in as his on-air comments enthralled cricket fans.

While his analysis showcased his understanding of the game, his cheeky sense of humour made him a fan favourite. However, one of his recent comments didn’t receive such a great response from the audience. During the second ODI between England and Sri Lanka at Lord’s, Karthik jokingly passed a comment which some fans found distasteful, and subsequently, the 36-year-old became the eye of the storm.

“Batsmen and not liking bats, they go hand in hand. Most of the batters don’t seem to like their bats. They either like another person’s bat. Bats are like a neighbour’s wife. They always feel better,” Karthik said in the commentary box. The veteran received a lot of backlash for his remarks as he was accused of casual sexism.

After coming across the matter, former Australian spinner Brad Hogg took the opportunity of pulling the wicketkeeper’s leg. “@DineshKarthik your neighbourhood is on high alert now,” Hogg tweeted alongside a couple of laughing emojis. Unsurprisingly,  his tweet went viral in no time and it would be interesting to see if Karthik, who has been an active user of social media, will come up with any response or not.

Dinesh Karthik apologises for his remarks

Meanwhile, Karthik has issued an apology for his remarks and even revealed that he got ‘a lot of stick’ from his wife and mother. “I want to apologise for what happened last game. It’s not really what I intended. I just got it all wrong. I apologise to everybody,” Karthik said while being on-air during the 3rd ODI on Sunday.

” It’s definitely not the right thing to say. I got a lot of stick from my wife and my mum for saying that. I am really sorry that it shouldn’t happen again,” he added.
