Injuries are a part and parcel of sports and cricket is no exception to it either. There have been many on-field mishaps in the sport in the past that have ended many careers. One of them was the heartbreaking incident featuring Australian batter Phil Hughes who succumbed to his injuries after being floored by a bouncer from Sean Abbot.

The other was a horrific eye injury which turned out to be a career-ending one for veteran South African stumper Mark Boucher after a dislodged bail damaged his retina during a warm-up game in 2012. Lately, one such horrific incident has left a seasoned Sri Lankan cricketer with multiple broken teeth.

Sri Lanka's bowling all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne sustained an awkward injury while fielding during the fourth match of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2022 between Kandy Falcons and Galle Gladiators on Wednesday, December 7. Karunaratne ended up losing four teeth after the ball struck him hard on the face while attempting a catch.

Reportedly, Chamika Karunaratne was admitted to a private hospital in Galle for immediate surgery. However, “Kandy Falcons Team Director said Chamika is stable and will be available for the Kandy stage,” according to Daily Mirror Online.

Meanwhile, this is the Colombo cricketer’s first stint for the Kandy Falcons in the LPL having previously represented Dambulla Giants (Dambulla Aura).

Coming back to the contest, Galle Gladiators were restricted to 121/8 after winning the toss and electing to bat first as Movin Subasingha (40) and Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim (34) were the only contributors with the bat for Galle. Caribbean all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite was the pick of the bowlers for Kandy with figures of 4/14 in his four overs including a maiden at an economy of 3.5.

In reply, the Kandy Falcons successfully chased down the total by five wickets and five overs to spare.
