'The system’s wrong and needs looking at' - Stuart Broad after England's 19-point slow over-rate penalty

Veteran England pacer Stuart Broad called time on his illustrious international career following the end of the 2023 Ashes. Broad, who is regarded as a 'Test specialist', announced his retirement after the third day’s play of the fifth and final Test at The Oval in London.

The 37-year-old has made a fairytale ending to his career, as he hit a six on the last ball he faced in Test cricket on the morning of Day 5. Meanwhile, he also picked the last two wickets in the final session to help his team register a series-levelling win in the Ashes.

During a recent interview with Daily Mail, Broad spoke about the love he has received from fans and how much he admires it.

“I woke up and saw a clip of headband-wearing fans in the crowd celebrating a wicket, and I was like, ‘wow’. I’ve always worn my heart on my sleeve but it was seeing what it meant to other people that got me.

“Later, as I took my dog Alfie to the park near where I live, I walked past a house five minutes down the road and there was a headband tied around the railings at the front. I looked up and there were posters in the window saying ‘thank you so much for your career’. It was really cool," Broad said.

England were penalised 19 World Test Championship (WTC) points for maintaining a slow over-rate during the recently concluded Ashes series. Meanwhile, Stuart Broad has expressed dissatisfaction with it, claiming that it weakened the relevance of WTC and that the system is flawed and needs to be reviewed.

“It diminishes the relevance of the World Test Championship, to be honest. It’s been one of the most entertaining series of all time, and for England to come out with nine points from a possible 60, the system’s wrong and needs looking at,” the veteran added.
