The 17th edition of the IPL T20 cricket tournament will kick off at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The two teams last met in the 24th match of the group stage of IPL 2023 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru where fifties from Devon Conway and Shivam Dube helped CSK beat RCB by just eight runs despite posting a mammoth 226/6. Skipper Faf du Plessis and talismanic batter Glenn Maxwell put RCB in reach of the total but it couldn't work out in the end.

These two teams have faced each other in the opening match of the season only once before, in 2019 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium when CSK put up an impeccable bowling performance to bowl RCB out for just 70 and subsequently made short work of the target.

The clash between these two marquee teams promises to be a fitting start to the tournament and will keep everyone hooked for the next two months.

MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch Report:

The pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk has always generally favoured spinners over pacers and has in recent years been generally very slow, two-paced, and on the lower-scoring side. But the presence of dew makes it slightly easier in the second innings.

CSK vs RCB Player Battles to Watch Out For:

Ravindra Jadeja vs Glenn Maxwell:

RCB's talisman Glenn Maxwell has a reputation of being a fearsome hitter of spin, but one spinner who he has been unable to counter is Ravindra Jadeja. While he scores at a healthy strike rate of 137.25 against the southpaw, he has been dismissed by Jadeja six times in just 11 innings with an average of just 11.66.

Ravindra Jadeja vs Virat Kohli:

Just like with Maxwell, Ravindra Jadeja has also been successful in tying Virat Kohli down. Even though Kohli has been dismissed only three times in 17 innings against Jadeja, he has only scored his runs at a paltry strike rate of 106.87 despite an impressive average of 46.66.

Ruturaj Gaikwad vs Mohammad Siraj:

Mohammad Siraj has been one of the best powerplay bowlers in the IPL in the last few years, hence it becomes important how CSK's openers see him out. Luckily for CSK, Ruturaj Gaikwad has gotten out to Siraj only once in six innings averaging 53 against him at a strike rate of 135.89.

Ajinkya Rahane vs Mohammad Siraj:

Ajinkya Rahane was a revelation last year in a never-seen-before avatar where he came out all guns blazing, but one way to constrict him might be to match him up against Mohammad Siraj. In five innings, Rahane has gotten out to Siraj only once, but he has scored his runs at a paltry strike rate of 38.09.

X-Factors for CSK vs RCB:

Chennai Super Kings:

Ravindra Jadeja will be the X-factor for CSK with his ability to restrict RCB's batsmen, especially on a surface that will help him. Jadeja has been in good form with both bat and ball in the last year or so, and will also lead this CSK bowling attack.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru:

Rajat Patidar comes in with a reputation for being a spin hitter, especially after the injury that ruled him out of IPL 2023. His skills in facing spin will be useful in a team full of players who are better at playing pace than spin.
