IPL 2024 Purple Cap Holder List: Fiery Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer Jasprit Bumrah leads the Purple Cap race in the ongoing IPL 2024  with 13 wickets after DC vs GT, Match 40 clash.

Bumrah has been at his usual best this season leading MI’s bowling lineup. His best performance came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) where he ended up with five wickets giving just 21 runs during Match 25, in Mumbai.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has once again proved why he is the best bowler of the tournament and is the joint-highest wicket-taker along with Bumrah with 13 wickets. The 33-year-old recently became the first player to pick 200 wickets in the history of IPL. His best figures came when he claimed a three-wicket haul in the 14th match of the season against the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians.

Harshal Patel from Punjab Kings (PBKS) is also among the top contenders for the Purple Cap with 13 wickets to his name from eight innings at an average of 21.38 and an economy of 9.58. The right-arm pacer has been consistent with the ball in the ongoing season and has been picking crucial wickets for his side in tough situations.

Kuldeep Yadav, the man with the golden arm for the Delhi Capitals franchise, displayed his sublime best during the game versus Gujarat Titans at home. Playing at Kotla, Yadav took a couple of wickets, giving away just 29 runs in his four-over spell. With this stupendous performance, the orthodox spinner stormed into the Purple Cap race with 12 wickets in six games. Interestingly, Kuldeep is only the second spinner in the top five, with Chahal holding the second spot currently.

SRH speedster T Natarajan has risen to the fifth spot on the Purple Cap list on the back of a sensational four-fer against Delhi Capitals in Match 35. He added two more to his wicket tally during Match 41 against RCB. The 33 year old has taken 12 wickets in just 6 matches with an average of 17.42. Interestingly, Natarajan has played the joint-least number of matches with Kuldeep Yadav in Top 5 of Purple Cap list. 

Last year’s IPL Purple Cap winner Mohammed Shami had been ruled out of the 2024 season due to an injury. But Mohit Sharma who was second on that list is in the race to win the coveted award this year as well. Currently picking 10 wickets, the Gujarat Titans pacer is not too far from entering the list. Now it will be intriguing to see who will remain consistent as the tournament approaches its business end.

• Sohail Tanvir was the first bowler to be awarded the Purple Cap for taking 22 wickets in 11 matches in the 2008 season.
• The record of most wickets in a single edition is jointly held by Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel. Bravo scalped 32 wickets in the 2015 season while Patel had 32 victims to his name in the 2021 season.
• Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only bowler to have won the Purple Cap in successive editions of the IPL (2016, 2017)

Rules for IPL Purple Cap 2024

• The Purple Cap is awarded to the leading wicket-taker of the IPL season.
• The bowler with the most wickets in the tournament during the season is allowed to wear the Cap in the field.
• In an event of a tie, the Purple Cap is awarded to the bowler with a better economy rate.

List of all IPL Purple Cap Winners from (2008 to 2024)

In the inaugural IPL season in 2008, the Purple Cap award was won by Sohail Tanvir. The Pakistan left-arm seamer scalped a total of 22 wickets in the tournament and scalped his wickets at a stupendous average of 12.09.

The first Indian cricketer to have been the recipient of the Purple Cap award is former left-arm fast bowler RP Singh during the 2009 season of the IPL. Singh took 23 wickets at a strike rate of 15.50 to bag the award.

Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the only two cricketers to have won the Purple Cap award on two occasions. While Bravo won the award in 2013 and 2015, Kumar laid his hands on the Purple Cap in 2016 and 2017.

The other players to have been the recipient of the Purple Cap award in IPL history are Pragyan Ojha, Lasith Malinga, Morne Morkel, Mohit Sharma, Andrew Tye, Imran Tahir, Kagiso Rabada, Harshal Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal.

In the 14th edition of the IPL, Harshal Patel won the Purple Cap award. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer scalped a gargantuan 32 wickets to win the Purple Cap award in 2021. Harshal shares the record for the most wickets in an IPL season with Dwayne Bravo, who scalped 32 wickets in the year 2013. With the 2024 season already underway, the race to grab the IPL Orange cap 2024 is also in full flow and several high-profile batters are trying to pip each other.
