Twitter Reactions: Bangladesh taste win after six matches as Shakib-Shanto star in run chase vs Sri Lanka

Bangladesh finally tasted victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they beat Sri Lanka by three wickets in Match 38 on Monday, November 06 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. After being put in to bat first, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 279 in 49.3 overs. In reply, Bangladesh chased down the target in 41.1 overs as Najmul Hossain Shanto and captain Shakib Al Hasan starred with the bat. 

Bangladesh lost their openers Tanzid Hasan (9 off 5) and Litton Das (23 off 22) cheaply with 42 runs on the board after 6.2 overs. However, Shanto (90 off 101) and Shakib (82 off 65) got involved in a massive 169-run stand for the third wicket to bring their team into a dominating position. Following their dismissals, Bangladesh lost wickets quickly as Angelo Mathews (2/35, 7.1 overs) and Maheesh Theekshana (2/44, 9 overs) picked two wickets each.

However, Towhid Hridoy (15* off 7) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (5* off 6) guided their team home with 53 balls to spare. Dilshan Madushanka was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka with figures of 3/69 in ten overs.

Earlier in the day, after being put in to bat first, Sri Lanka lost their opener Kusal Perera (4 off 5) in the first over itself courtesy of a breathtaking catch by Mushfiqur Rahim. Captain Kusal Mendis (19 off 30) also departed cheaply leaving his side on 66/2 after 11.3 overs. However, Pathum Nissanka (41 off 36) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (41 off 42) stabilized the innings with their handy knocks.

Charith Asalanka scored a magnificent hundred

Sri Lankan innings was once again put in a precarious situation after losing Nissanka and Smarawickrama. A bizarre timed-out dismissal of Angelo Mathews further left them reeling at 135/5 after 24.2 overs. The innings was rescued by Charith Asalanka (108 off 105) who scored a magnificent hundred with the help of six fours and five sixes in his innings. Dhananjaya de Silva (34 off 36) and Maheesh Theekshana (22 off 31) also made valuable contributions to help their side reach 279 all out in 49.3 overs.
