Sri Lanka Head Coach Chris Silverwood has a firm belief in the Dasun Shanaka-led side despite their defeat at the hands of Australia in their second match of the Super 12 stage in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. He feels that the Lankan Lions can still secure a semi-final berth despite the nightmarish experience against Australia in Perth.

The 47-year-old also appreciated the blistering knock of Marcus Stoinis (59* runs off just 18 balls) which completely turned the tables in the favour of the hosts.

“We knew Australia had to come hard at us because of their net run rate, the way he (Stoinis) came back at us and struck the ball was exceptional,” said Silverwood during the post-match press conference.

Silverwood also spoke about the injury concerns in the Sri Lankan team and mentioned the ways to cope up with the same.

When asked on how the team will cope with the injuries while going ahead in the tournament Silverwood came up with an optimistic reply. He said that it would be too early to make any decision at the moment. Silverwood also stressed on the fact that nothing can be judged before the arrival of reports from the physios.

“Well, I mean, any injury, obviously, in a World Cup is, hard work. Obviously, we will take stock of where everybody is at the moment. I mean, it is too early to make too many, get too many answers at the moment. So, we will just have to obviously see where the guys are. Once, the physio gives a report then we will make plans, but it is too early to say too much of them,” said Sri Lanka coach.

While summing up his remarks Silverwood also touched upon the performance of the Sri Lankan team in the Asia Cup 2022 where they emerged as the title winners.

"We showed that in the Asia Cup and the confidence is growing within the group. The important thing from today is to regroup and get ready for the next game. I can't fault the way the guys at the top of the order played. The ball did move around early on. Life was difficult for us. We're not used to that sort of bounce that we get here in Perth. The way they went about their business to set that platform...they did very well,” concluded Silverwood.
