Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the guy everyone is talking about since yesterday. Not Virat Kohli, not Rohit Sharma, it’s the Indian skipper. Gone are the days when critics were concerned with his form with the bat and his captaincy. After yesterday’s win against Bangladesh, MSD gained heaps of praise from fans and critics alike. And why not? India did pull off something spectacular yesterday. As Tom Moody aptly put it, “Bangladesh snatch defeat from the jaws of victory”

Sure, in the end, it was Bangladesh who lost the match more than India winning it but here’s a complete list of all those ‘Dhoni things’ that changed the course of the match, ultimately giving India their much needed victory:

Last ball single in India’s innings:

Last ball of the innings. Mustfizur to MS Dhoni, Yorker on middle stump, he played the ball towards long on, took one run and continues to blaze through for a second despite R Ashwin saying no! The skipper pushed him, the throw was at the wrong end. India get 2. How important was this second run? We all know now.

God-like timing in Sabbir Rahman’s stumping:

Raina bowled a wide to Sabbir Rahman in the 10th over. Sabbir was in the crease when Dhoni collected the ball, but just as Sabbir was trying to balance himself, he anticipates the batsman to lift his foot and in that split-second, MSD took off the bails. To literally everyone’s surprise, the batsman was given out. Sabbir was 26 off just 15 with 3 fours and a six to his name.

Bowling Ashwin’s last over in the 13th over and placing a slip for Shakib:

Bangladesh needed just 52 runs in 8 overs and Shakib Al Hasan was blasting the Indian bowlers with his 22 (14). Skipper realized the importance of that wicket and brought Ashwin to bowl his last over. He also placed Raina at slip in the 13th over to gobble up any edge. Ashwin tossed up the ball, it turned and produced the edge. Raina comfortably accepted it. Incredible captaincy!

Took gloves off and sprints towards stumps to effect a last ball run-out:

The icing on the cake. This was a true reflection of Dhoni’s captaincy and composure. He instructed Pandya to bowl a back of the length bouncer and took the gloves off his right hand. The ball is executed brilliantly. The batsman missed it and went for the run. He collected the ball and decides not to throw and leave anything to chance. Instead, he sprinted towards the stumps like his life depended on it, and hit! The batsman is run out. Dhoni showed absolutely incredible presence of mind composure to win India the game!
