7 Cricketers and their batting averages before and after marriage

The concept of lady luck is not new. For the cricketers too, their partners have often brought luck. In a very hilarious and a unique analysis shown in the pre-match show Extraaa Innings T20 during the IPL, the averages of cricketers before and after their marriage was compared. The most noticeable thing is the list was that for some cricketers, the averages leapfrogged to a new high while others saw a serious dip in form. Marriage has not just seen a positive impact but it has been otherwise as well. Then there were a few who fell in the league of indifference too. The players in the list include some of the biggest names in international cricket. Read on to find who fall in which category: 1. Shane Watson: Shane Watson. (© Getty Images) Shane Watson, the former Australian batsman, had an indifferent career pre and post his marriage. Watson, who currently plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, averaged 40.64 in One Day Internationals before his marriage. There was a slight dip, almost negligible, in his ODI average after he got marriage to his wife Lee Furlong in 2010. The average dipped just 0.20 points to 40.44. However, his Test average fell significantly from 39.43 prior to his marriage to 33.52 after he got married. Watson certainly didn’t have the best of times in the longest format post marriage. (Photo by David Munden/Popperfoto/Getty Images) Perhaps the most consistent in the list was the name of Ramiz Raja. Ramiz averaged 31.42 before his marriage in the ODIs and 32.41 after his marriage. He certainly belongs to the indifferent category. Raja, who played 57 Tests for Pakistan, averaged 32.28 before his marriage in Tests and the average dipped slightly to 31.62 after. Clearly the popular commentator didn’t let his marriage affect his game in any way! He seems to have rather enjoyed his game more after doubling up. (Photo by Chris Hyde – CA/Cricket Australia/Getty Images) The most awaited stat is here. Indian limited overs skipper MS Dhoni got married to his long-time friend Sakshi Singh Rawat in the year 2010. However, the best finisher in limited overs cricket maintained the same game even after trying the knot. While Dhoni averaged 51.31 in ODIs before his marriage to Sakshi, his average remained almost same, 51.15 after his marriage. On the Test front, Dhoni didn’t enjoy the same story, though. His average fell from 42.59 in Tests to 34.42. He eventually retired from Test cricket in 2015. 4. Faf du Plessis: Faf du Plessis. (Photo Source: BCCI) The South African T20 skipper, Faf du Plessis got married a couple of years ago to his long-term girlfriend Imari Visser. Faf’s story of averages is unique and probably one of its kind. It seems the averages switched across both formats. In Tests, du Plessis averaged 58.50 before marriage and it dipped drastically to 35.38 after marriage. On the other hand, the ODI average saw him gain the same amount that he lost in Tests. From averaging 27.55 in 50 overs cricket before marriage to moving to an impressive 54.17 after getting married in quite a leap! 5. David Warner: David Warner. (© Getty Images) Candice Warner has brought the lady luck for the swashbuckling Australian opener, David Warner. Warner has two daughters and they have certainly been very lucky for him. In the last couple of years, the Aussie has matured extensively as a cricketer and developed not just his batting but captaincy as well. Warner averaged just 34.69 in ODIs before being engaged to Candice Falzon. He saw a tremendous jump in his average to 61.25 post-marriage. David found gains in the Test format as well. AB de Villiers: AB de Villiers of South Africa. (Photo by Pal Pillai/IDI via Getty Images) AB de Villiers recently became a proud father. Having proposed to his long-time girlfriend Danielle at the iconic Taj Mahal in India, AB has found a good leap in his average in ODIs after getting married. De Villiers averaged just 50.38 before marriage in the 50-over format and has moved to 64.14 post-wedding. He has gained more than almost 14 points in his ODI average. In the Tests though, AB remained at the same constant level, averaging in the vicinity of 50s, from 50.50 to 50.29. It has come down a bit but not significantly to make any conclusion! 7. Navjot Singh Sidhu: Navjot Singh Sidhu batting for India against Australia. (Photo by Bob Thomas/Getty Images). The biggest leap was taken by the former Indian opener and the charismatic commentator, Navjot Singh Sidhu. Sidhu is happily married to Navjot Kaur Sidhu for years now and she has certainly brought him a lot of luck, though only in Test cricket. Sidhu, who has played 51 Tests for India, averaged just 13 before his marriage. He then leapfrogged to 43.32 after his marriage to settle with 3202 Test runs with 9 centuries.
