Anurag Thakur was seen inside the President’s Box during the Grand Finale of the Indian Premier League between the Chennai Super Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. It has sparked speculations of his return to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Moreover, he had a chat with Uday Shankar, the boss of Star Sports.

Both attended the post-IPL party on Sunday night following CSK’s victory. His presence has created an excitement among the BCCI members who wished to be seen with him. However, a lot will depend on how the Supreme Court will treat the ‘cooling off’ in the Lodha Reforms. Meanwhile, most of the board members are pretty optimistic about the apex court’s treatment of the plea sympathetically.

Thakur’s comeback?

As per reports in the Mumbai Mirror, provided that happens, he could be back as the president with Anirudh Chaudhary, the current treasurer, as the secretary whenever the elections take place. He was ousted by the Supreme Court last year. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) had a meeting yesterday in Delhi to take a stock of the situation. They also met representatives of Telangana and Chhattisgarh.

In May 2016, the son of former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, Anurag Thakur was elected as the BCCI President following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya. Prior to that, he was the secretary of the BCCI back in 2011 and had a fair amount of experience as the president of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association. The IPL Final was his first cricketing appearance following his eviction.

In January 2017, the Supreme Court ordered Thakur and Secretary Ajay Shirke to forthwith cease and demit office. Previously, Thakur denied applying the Lodha Panel’s recommendations owing to which the accounts of the BCCI was frozen, which agitated Thakur. The situation only worsened from there onwards.
