Apart from action between bat and ball, the cricket field has been a witness to several other funny incidents over the years. From pitch invaders to dust-storms and many more, there hasn’t been any shortage of entertainment by any means. However, at the Manuka Oval in Canberra, the cricketing world saw something extremely bizarre, albeit it brought about a sense of positivity.

Sri Lanka’s tour of Australia got underway with a warm-up match at the very venue. The visiting team locked horns with the Prime Ministers XI and it turned out to be a pretty low-scoring affair. However, during Lanka’s innings, Scott Morrison, the Australian Prime Minister, was seen running on to the field and he had the drinks carrier in his hands, much to the surprise of many.

It was after the 16th over when Sri Lanka’s score was 110 for the loss of six wickets. Morrison was wearing the home team’s yellow cap and went up to the likes of Chris Lynn and Jason Sangha. The enigmatic figure was also wearing a white formal shirt, black trousers and a green-coloured tie. From the morale ground, it was heartening to see the Aussie PM carrying drinks for the players.

Tough work for Sri Lankan

As far as the game was concerned, Lanka, led by Niroshan Dickwella, found it tough to get going with the bat in hand. The Lankans won the toss and elected to bat first after which they could manage 131 runs in 20 overs. Oshada Fernando top scored with 38 runs and his knock was laced with three fours and a couple of sixes. Bhanuka Rajapaksha and Wanindu Hasaranga scored in the 20s.

For the PM XI, Djali Bloomfield and Daniel Christian picked up two wickets each. The run-chase wasn’t a straight forward one for the hosts by any stretch of the imagination. Lakshan Sandakan picked up three wickets, conceding only 21 runs in his quota of four overs.

Kasun Rajitha lent him good support with wickets at the top. Harry Nielsen of the opposition held one end up and scored a masterful half-century to steady the ship for his side.
