India ended their decade-long wait for a Test win in Australia but not without a fight from the Australian lower-order on the final day of the first Test. India took some time in the morning session to dismiss the overnight batsmen. Skipper Tim Paine got out after Lunch and their position was 187/7. They were still in need for another 136 runs to win. The bottom half of the batting added 41, 31 and 32 runs for the last three wickets respectively before losing their last wicket when 32 more runs were needed for a historic win.

Here are all the major stats and numbers recorded during a rare Indian Test win in Australia:

A couple of firsts by the Indian team:

1 – For the first time, India won the first match of a Test series in Australia. In the previous 11 Test series down under, India lost the first match on nine occasions and drew on two other instances.

41 – India won an away Test match for the first time after being four down for 50 and fewer runs in the first innings. The 41 runs they added for the first four wickets were the joint second lowest to result in a victory.

India were four down by 31 in the first innings of the 2004 Mumbai Test against Australia and 41/4 in the 1975 Chennai Test against the Windies.

A rare feat for Kohli:

1Virat Kohli became the first to win Test matches in England, Australia and South Africa as the visiting captain. There are 13 other captains from England, Australia and South Africa who have won a Test match each in these three countries.

6 – Kohli is also the 6th captain to win a Tests in England, Australia and South Africa in the same calendar year. Joe Darling (1902), Kepler Wessels (1994), Mark Taylor (1997), Graeme Smith (2008 & 2012) and Ricky Ponting (2009) are the other five skippers to achieve this feat.

A close win:

31 – India’s 31-run win in this match is their 3rd narrowest Test win in terms of runs. They defeated Australia by 13 runs in the 2004 Mumbai Test and England by 28 runs in the 1972/73 Kolkata Test.

World record for Pant:

11 – Number of dismissals effected by Rishabh Pant in this Test match; the joint-most by any wicketkeeper in a Test match. These are the most for an Indian surpassing Wriddhiman Saha’s ten dismissals in the Cape Town Test against South Africa at the start of 2018. Pant also became the first keeper with ten dismissals in a Test match in Australia.

No big partnerships:

50 – Travis Head and Pat Cummins added 50 runs for the 7th wicket in the first essay which is only the fifty-run stand for Australia in this game. This is the second lowest highest partnership in a home Test in the last 100 years for Australia where they had 20 partnerships. The Aussies had the highest stand of 48 during the 1979 Sydney Test against England.

87 – The 87-run partnership between Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the second innings is the highest partnership in this match. This is the joint smallest highest partnership in a Test match that aggregated 1000+ runs.

The 1987 Melbourne Test match between Australia and New Zealand had the highest stand of 87 which witnessed a total of 1190 runs being scored. Out of the 241 Test matches with 1000+ runs, this Adelaide Test with 1083 runs, is only the 6th Test without a century stand.

291 – Australia’s second innings total of 291 is the highest Test total without a fifty-run partnership. The 6th and 8th wickets had a partnership of 41 runs which is the highest in their innings. The previous highest Test total without a fifty-run stand was 284 by Bangladesh against Windies in the 2004 Kingston Test where the highest partnership was 48.

Sharing wickets:

3/47 – Jasprit Bumrah’s first innings figures of 3/47 are the best for an Indian in this Test match. This is only the 9th Test that India won without any of their bowlers taking a four-wicket haul. Five of those nine wins are outside India and the first in England/Australia/South Africa/ New Zealand.

This is also the 3rd time Australia were defeated by a visiting team without an individual four-fer. England won the 1955 Adelaide Test and the 1971 Sydney Test without any of their bowlers taking a 4-fer.

Catch the match:

35 – As many as 35 wickets in this Test fell via catches in this game which are the most in a Test match. The previous most number of wickets via catches in a Test was 34 wickets during the South Africa-Australia Test in Cape Town this year. 23 consecutive wickets came through catches since Cummins’ LBW in the first innings in this Adelaide Test.
