Australia haven’t been able to win a whole lot of games in the last two years and with a number of controversies marring the reputation of their cricket, they haven’t had the best of times. The Aussies are currently in India for a limited-overs series after which they’ll play Pakistan followed by the ICC World Cup in England and Wales where they’ll be entering as the defending champions.

In the meantime, Cricket Australia (CA) has put forth the jersey, the cricket team would be donning next summer and it’s the one used for the 1999 World Cup, which they won beating Pakistan in the final at the renowned Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The cricketing body had invited supporters to pick their favourite all-time Aussie kit for the 2019-20 summer.

The poll started with seven classic Australian jerseys from the 20th century and one from the early 2000s. Four outfits were eliminated in the first round as well. Jerseys from 1992 and 1994, the blue stripes from 1999-2001 and the lightning bolts from 1992-94 progressed to the next stage. The ‘lightning bolts and the 1999 World Cup jersey competed in the final.

The latter came out trumps as 67 per cent of the voters came out in its favour. CA’s official Instagram handle posted a picture of the different jerseys with the winning-jersey in the middle. They captioned the picture and wrote,  “After more than 447k votes, the results are in! Cricket fans have voted for the 🇦🇺 Men to wear the 1999 World Cup outfit next summer 🙌 #PickTheKit,”

A glorious World Cup

Australia won the championship in 1999 for the second time under the leadership of the evergreen Steve Waugh. The final turned out to be completely one-sided. Thereafter, Ricky Ponting led the team to glory in 2003 and 2007 and in 2015, Michael Clarke, helped Australia get their hands on the silverware, beating New Zealand in the final.
