Ricky Ponting has recently been appointed as Australia’s assistant coach ahead of the ICC World Cup in England and Wales that is scheduled to get underway on Thursday, May 30. The Aussies have been in the shambles for quite some now and despite being the world champions, they aren’t being considered as one of the favourites to get their hands on the coveted trophy.
In the meantime, Glenn Maxwell, the experienced all-rounder, heaped praises on Punter, as Ponting is popularly known, and his influence in the Australian dressing room. As per Maxwell, it was the legendary cricketer’s pep-talk that helped the national team track down a mammoth 244 in 18.5 overs against New Zealand at the Eden Park in Auckland on February 18, 2018.
He can even change your mindset with just a conversation
“The confidence that he gave the group when he walked into the changeroom was undoubted, and just something different. He makes you feel like you can walk on water sometimes. He’s a good person for the batters to talk different tactics with because he can read someone’s technique really well.
And he’s an unbelievable coach in the way that he coaches technique and the basics of the game,” Maxwell was quoted as saying in an interview with cricket.com.au.
“He can spend five minutes with you and work out any flaws and strengths that can slightly help, without changing your game too much. He can even change your mindset with just a conversation because of his amazing ability,” he added.
As far as Maxwell is concerned, he’s in decent enough form, playing for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL). The 30-year-old captained his team to final of the T20 tournament against Melbourne Renegades tomorrow. With the bat in hand, the swashbuckling batsman has notched 330 runs in 12 matches at an average of 36.66 with a couple of half-centuries.
