BCCI considering Women’s IPL next year onward

The Women’s IPL exhibition match between the Trailblazers and the Supernovas in Mumbai took place on May 21. The match went right down to the wire and eventually, the Supernovas, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, won by three wickets in the last ball. After the success of the contest, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a women’s edition of the tournament from the next year. The event will have three to four teams in action as per reports in the Indian Express. Earlier, Vinod Rai, the Chairman of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) talked about conducting the league in two to three years’ time. However, the BCCI recently put forth their contemplation of hosting the T20 event from 2019 itself in order to maintain consistency. “It’s important to have continuity. The exhibition game was just a start. We agree to the fact that we could have planned it better which we will do from next season,” a BCCI official mentioned. There were various reasons for the stadium being near-empty but we are hopeful that slowly the popularity will increase. That is why we are now mulling a 3-4 team women’s league from next year in smaller centres. Smaller cities like Baroda, have seen a great turnout for women’s games generally,” the official added. Indian women’s glorious run Women’s cricket in India has grown by leaps and bounds in the last one year. The World Cup was held last year and India progressed to the Final of the tournament versus England. Albeit they lost to the hosts by a slender margin, the team attracted appreciations and admiration for their spirited performance. The likes of Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and others lit up the tournament. Later in 2017, the team toured South Africa for a T20I and ODI series and played alongside their male counterparts. Thereafter, the played matches against England and Australia at home. Following their stupendous run of form, there has been a constant pressure on the board to conduct a women’s IPL and that is steadily falling into place.
