T20 World Cup 2022: Team-wise one spinner who can make an impact

The T20 World Cup 2022 is just around the corner. The marquee event is set to kick off with the group stages on October 16 and then the action will move to the Super 12 round on October 22. The teams are sweating it out ahead of the marquee event. The tournament will be held in Australia which is considered a happy-hunting ground for pacers. However, all the top teams qualified for the main draw have in their arsenal high-quality spinners who can make use of the conditions with perfection. Let us look at the spinners who can thrive in the upcoming global tournament. 8. Adam Zampa (AUS) Adam Zampa has been Australia’s leading spinner in white-ball cricket for the last couple of years. He is a smart customer with the ability to deceive batsmen in the air and off the pitch. Zampa has proven to be tough to tackle with subtle changes of pace and variations. The wrong'un and straight ball are two of his main weapons. The World Cup being in his home country makes him even more dangerous as he is quite accustomed to bowling in those conditions. Zampa was instrumental in Australia’s maiden T20 World Cup victory in 2021 finishing second on the wickets column with 13 scalps from seven games at an economy of 5.81. This year again eyes will be on the 30-year-old as Australia look to defend their crown. 7. Ish Sodhi (NZ) Ish Sodhi has been a proven performer for New Zealand with the ball in the shortest format. The 29-year-old has made 76 appearances for his national side and taken 99 wickets at an economy of 8.02. Sodhi has a wicket-taking ability and this makes him a vital cog in the New Zealand bowling lineup. His economy can be on the higher side at times but this is a trade-off for the number of breakthroughs he can offer. The dimensions of the ground in Australia will suit Sodhi’s style of attacking bowling. He was a key figure in New Zealand's road to last year’s World Cup Final claiming nine wickets in seven games. This year too the Ludhiana-born will be the trump card for his team, especially in the middle-overs. 6. Adil Rashid ( ENG) Adil Rashid has been England’s mainstay with the ball in limited overs cricket. The veteran spinner has been entrusted to break partnerships for his side and has played the role with perfection. Rashid has been a match-winner for the Three Lions in the shortest format of the game. In the 76 appearances for his national side and the 34-year-old has picked 83 wickets at an economy of 7.35. Also, in the previous T20 World Cup, the ace-spinner was amongst the wickets for England with nine wickets to his name. England’s strike force in the middle-overs, Rashid has developed the art of bowling in the powerplay and also the death overs. This gives England skipper Jos Buttler more options on the field. 5. Mohammad Nawaz (PAK) Mohammad Nawaz has been a consistent performer for Pakistan in the shortest format. The 28-year-old has proved in mettle in the international arena with his excellent performances. The left-arm orthodox spinner has represented his national side for 36 matches and taken 33 wickets at an economy of 6.95. Nawaz is quite spot on with his lines and lengths and has the versatility to bowl in different phases of the game. Nawaz has been in a rich vein of form with the ball. In the recently concluded Asia Cup, the ace-spinner took eight wickets at an impressive economy of 5.89. His exploits with the ball will be crucial in Pakistan’s campaign in the upcoming global tournament in Australia. 4. Rashid Khan (AFG) Rashid Khan is arguably one of the best bowlers in the T20 circuit at the moment. He is Afghanistan’s wrecker-in-chief with the ball and is renowned to bamboozle opposition with his variations. The 23-year-old has played 71 T20I games and taken 118 wickets at an outstanding economy of 6.25. Rashid though not a big turner of the ball, puts batters under pressure with his speed through the air while maintaining a wicket-to-wicket line. Rashid is a complete package and can bowl at any phase of the game. Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi brings his ace-spinner into the attack whenever the team is in need of wickets and the man delivers. The veteran spinner will be key to Afghanistan’s chances in the marquee tournament. 3. Tabraiz Shamsi (SA) Tabraiz Shamsi has established himself as a key figure in South Africa’s T20 setup on the back of match-winning performances. The left-arm wrist spinner has made 56 appearances for the Proteas in the shortest format and has 69 wickets to his name at an economy of 7.11. The 32-year-old has many variations up his sleeve and has a hard-to-pick googly. Shamsi is used as a wicket-taking option by his side and has been playing the role with perfection. Shamsi is a brave bowler and not afraid to lure the batsmen with the flight of the delivery. Several of his wickets have come with the batters attempting to clear the ropes. In the previous T20I series, the Johannesburg-born was amongst the wickets which is a good sign for South Africa with T20 World Cup around the corner. 2. Shakib Al Hasan (BAN) Shakib Al Hasan is one of the greatest cricketers to have emerged from Bangladesh Cricket. The veteran all-rounder is the team’s leading spinner and the onus will be on him to deliver for his side with the ball. The Bangladesh skipper is the giant of the game in the T20 format. He is the highest wicket-taker in T20Is with 122 wickets to his name in 101 games at an economy of 6.67. Shakib is flawless with his lines and lengths and is renowned to fox batters with his variations. The 35-year-old is Bangladesh’s all-weather bowler and has the ability to bowl at any phase of the game. Shakib has a lot of experience playing in Australia and will be vital to his team’s chances in the T20 extravaganza slated to be held next month. 1. Yuzvendra Chahal (IND) Yuzvendra Chahal is India’s premier spinner in the white-ball format and has been the go-to man for the Men in Blue to provide regular breakthroughs. The 32-year-old has made 66 appearances for his national side and fetched 83 wickets at an economy of 8.09. Chahal is accurate with his lines and lengths and is known to strangle batters with his variations. Generally used by India in the middle phases of the game, the wily spinner has improved his prowess with the ball in the death overs as well. Chahal is a bowler with a lot of heart and is unfazed by batsmen trying to take him on. The ace-spinner is an attacking bowler and his aggressive style of bowling will be suited for the big grounds in Australia. His form will be crucial for Rohit Sharma & Co. in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
