5 players RR might release ahead of IPL 2026 auction

Rajasthan Royals (RR) endured one of their poorest campaigns in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, finishing ninth in the points table. After such a disappointing season, the franchise is expected to make several bold decisions ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. They won their only IPL title in the inaugural 2008 season, and will aim to rebuild their squad and return stronger next year. (Photo source: X) West Indies power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer could be one of the notable names to be released by Rajasthan Royals. Retained ahead of the 2025 season for a hefty INR 11 crore, Hetmyer failed to justify his price tag with below-par performances. He managed to score only 239 runs in 13 innings at an average of 21.72. He is known for his explosive finishing skills, and struggled to provide the much-needed stability in the middle and lower order. His inconsistency in crunch moments and inability to finish games might lead RR to look for a more reliable finisher in his place. Tushar Deshpande Tushar Deshpande. He played 10 matches, and picked up wickets sporadically but was far too expensive, conceding runs at a poor average of 37.77. His four-over spells often went for plenty, putting pressure on other bowlers and making it difficult for the team to defend totals. With RR desperately needing a dependable death bowler, Deshpande’s inconsistent form may prompt the management to explore other pace options in the upcoming auction. Maheesh Theekshana Maheesh Theekshana (Source: Pankaj Nangia/Getty Images) Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana, who was roped in to strengthen RR’s spin attack, also underperformed in IPL 2025, as he managed to take only 11 wickets in as many games, which was an underwhelming return for a bowler of his calibre. He has earlier played for Chennai Super Kings with moderate success, but Theekshana’s spells lacked penetration and control in crucial moments. RR might consider releasing him to free up an overseas slot and bringing in a more effective spinner or all-round option. Nitish Rana Nitish Rana. Despite his experience and aggressive batting approach, Rana managed just 217 runs in 11 games. While his strike rate was decent, his inability to play big, match-defining innings hurt the team’s middle order. Given his inconsistent form, RR might part ways with him to bring in a more dependable batter. Fazalhaq Farooqi Fazalhaq-Farooqi. He featured in just five matches, failing to pick a single wicket, struggling to adapt in the cash-rich league. Despite his experience in international and franchise cricket, Farooqi could not make an impact. With plenty of overseas pacers available in the market, RR may choose to release him and look for a more effective bowler.
