IPL Orange Cap Winners 2008–2024: Where are they now?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a tournament where we have seen some incredible performances with the bat. The highest achievement for the batter in the tournament is the Orange Cap, which is awarded to the highest run scorer of the season. There have been some great cricketers who have gone on to win the prestigious award in the tournament. Though the winners of the Orange Cap over the years in the cash-rich tournament are well-known, it is time to discuss the current status of these players. It will be interesting to learn about what the players have done and what they are currently doing in their day-to-day lives after gaining the attention of the fans after their great performance in that respective season. Let's look at the IPL Orange Cap winners and where they are now (2008 to 2024): 1. Shaun Marsh (2008) - Retired from international cricket Shaun Marsh. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) It was the inaugural season of the IPL, and the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab or KXIP) were one of the top teams in the tournament. The best batter for the franchise was Australia's top-order batter Shaun Marsh, who lit up the season for the team, scoring 616 runs at an average of 68.44 and had a strike rate of 139.68. These performances officially made him the first orange cap winner in the tournament. Speaking of Marsh’s current status within the cricketing scene, he was last seen in the 2023-24 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) playing his last game for the Melbourne Renegades. He is officially retired from all forms of cricket and has not featured in any game since January 2024. However, his younger brother Mitchell Marsh is currently playing and his having one of his best seasons in IPL 2025. 2. Matthew Hayden (2009)- Retired, Cricket Commentator Matthew Hayden. (Photo by Julian Herbert-IPL 2010/IPL via Getty Images) Matthew Hayden was one of the best openers for Australia and was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in 2008. The top-order batter was at his fluent best in the 2009 season, which took place in South Africa. Hayden topped the scoring charts that year with 572 runs from the 12 innings he played at a fantastic average of 52.00. He also maintained a healthy strike rate of 144.81, becoming the second Australian batter to win the Orange Cap. Hayden, now 53, hung his boots from all forms of cricket in 2009 including the IPL, but is still making his presence felt in the tournament. Hayden is currently part of the commentary panel for IPL 2025, sharing his insights and experiences in the mega tournament. 3. Sachin Tendulkar (2010) - MI Icon Sachin Tendulkar (Source: MIL) Sachin Tendulkar was one of the key players for the Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2013. The first two seasons saw the Master Blaster struggling to get used to the format, but he eventually had one of his best seasons in 2010, where he became the first Indian player to win the Orange Cap. Tendulkar scored 618 runs at an average of 47.53 and had a strike rate of 132.61. His performances helped the Mumbai franchise reach the finals that year as well. Sachin had played his last competitive game in 2013, which is also the year he retired from all forms of cricket. The Mumbai-born, after retiring from the game, had been a mentor of the MI franchise and now acts as an Icon for the franchise, and also had a short stint in Indian politics as a Rajya Sabha member. He is currently working as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, where he has decided to donate a lot of money and show support towards proper health and education for the underprivileged. 4. Chris Gayle (2011 and 2012) - Retired from all cricket Gayle ( Photo source : X / Twitter ) Chris Gayle has been one of the prominent figures in West Indies cricket and has had one of the most prominent IPL careers. Gayle had one of his best seasons with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and became the first player to win two back-to-back orange caps in 2011 and 2012. The Universe Boss scored 608 runs in 2011 and 733 runs in 2012, establishing himself as an RCB legend. Though Gayle has not been part of many competitive cricket leagues, he has been a part of exhibition tournaments that features retired cricketers. Apart from that, he has been seen in the music scene where he has released some reggae and hip-hop songs and has collaborated with top global musicians. He also served as the ambassador of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which India won under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. 5. Michael Hussey (2013) - CSK batting coach Michael Hussey. (Photo Source: Twitter) Michael Hussey has been one of the most beloved figures in Australian cricket, known for his match-winning knocks. He also proved that in the IPL, playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He is a two-time IPL champion with the yellow brigade and won the Orange Cap in 2013, while playing for the Chennai franchise. Hussey scored 733 runs at an average of 52.35 and had a strike rate of 129.50 that season. The 50-year-old Aussie batter played his last T20 match in 2016 and has delved into coaching duties. The 2007 World Cup winner was appointed as the batting coach for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2018 was also part of the coaching staff headed by Stephen Fleming in the current season for the side as well. 6. Robin Uthappa (2014) - Commentator Robin Uthappa. (Photo Source: Twitter) Former India wicketkeeper-batter Robin Uthappa has had a decent IPL career, where he has played for six teams and more than 200 games in the tournament. However, the main highlight of his IPL career came in 2014, playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Uthappa won the Orange Cap, scoring 660 runs at an average of 44 and had a strike rate of 137.78, and was one of the key performers who helped the team win their second IPL title. The 39-year-old former opener played his last IPL match in 2022, where he represented the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against the Mumbai Indians, and has now grown into becoming a well-renowned commentator and a YouTuber as well. He is currently part of the IPL 2025 commentary panel. 7. David Warner (2015, 2017, and 2019)- Currently playing franchise cricket David Warner SRH. (Photo Source: BCCI) David Warner is one of the legendary figures within the IPL who has scored more than 6500 runs and has been a successful captain in the tournament as well. Warner, apart from leading the Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first-ever IPL title, has won the Orange Cap three times, which is the most by any batter in the tournament so far. The Aussie opener had achieved the feat in 2015 (562 runs), 2017 (641 runs), and 2019 (692 runs). In 2024, Warner decided to retire from international cricket following the T20 World Cup, which Australia lost. However, he continues to be a part of franchise cricket around the globe, and featured in tournaments like the International League T20, Big Bash League, and the Pakistan Super League as well. 8. Virat Kohli (2016 and 2024) - Active India and RCB cricketer Virat-Kohli. (Photo source: IPL) The batter who has established himself as one of the best players in the tournament is Virat Kohli, who is still the leading run scorer in the tournament. Though Kohli has not managed to take the RCB franchise all the way, he has still been an absolute run machine. He won the Orange Cap in 2016 and 2024 and is the only Indian batter to achieve the feat on multiple occasions. 2016 was his best season in the tournament, where he went on to score 973 runs, which is the most runs by a batter in a single season. Virat is very much a part of the RCB franchise even today and is enjoying another great season with 614 runs at an average of 55.81. The Bengaluru franchise has also reached their fourth IPL final after beating the Punjab Kings in the finals. After retiring from T20Is and Tests, the Delhi-born continues to represent India in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs). 9. KL Rahul (2020) - Active India and DC cricketer KL Rahul. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) KL Rahul has been one of the most consistent batters in the IPL since 2018, where there has only been one season where he has not broken the 400-run mark. Rahul has so far represented five teams in the IPL and has played some of his best knocks while playing for Punjab Kings. The 2020 season was his best season in terms of runs, scoring 670 runs at an average of 55.83. Rahul was representing the Delhi Capitals in the 2025 season, and despite being a late entrant owing to an injury, he ended as the highest run-getter for the franchise with 539 runs from 13 games at an average of 53.90.Though the Capitals failed to qualify for the Playoffs by a whisker, the Bengaluru-born still looked in great form in the tournament, which is one of the positives for the franchise. He continues to be a core member of the Indian team in the international arena as well. 10. Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021) - CSK captain Ruturaj-Gaikwad. (Photo source: X) The IPL is known for promoting some upcoming stars in the tournament, and one such name for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2021 season was Ruturaj Gaikwad. The current CSK skipper established himself in the 2021 edition, emerging as the top run scorer with 635 runs at an average of 45.35. Gaikwad went on to be one of the top run-getters for the franchise in 2023 and 2024 as well. The 28-year-old top-order batter’s IPL 2025 season was currently cut short after five matches due to a hairline fracture on the left arm. However, he was recently named in the India A squad and is currently in England, where the team is playing a two-match Test series against the England Lions, and will also play the senior side before the latter commence their five Tests against England. 11. Jos Buttler (2022) - Active England cricketer Buttler (Photo source : IPL) The English players tend to struggle and get going in the IPL. However, the same could not be said about Jos Buttler. The hard-hitting stumper-batter in the 121 games he has played has scored 4120 runs at an average of 40 and has a phenomenal strike rate of 149.38. The best season of the 34-year-old Englishman came in the 2022 edition while representing the Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 863 runs at an average of 57.53. This made him the first English cricketer to bag the Orange Cap as well. Buttler was having a great season in 2025 as well, where he scored 538 runs at an average of 59.77 and had a strike rate of 163.03 while playing for the Gujarat Titans. However, he was ruled out of the Playoffs due to national duties and is currently playing in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies. 12. Shubman Gill (2023) - GT and India Test captain Shubman Gill (Source: BCCI) One of the brightest stars in Indian cricketing circles is none other than Fazilka-born opener Shubman Gill. The 25-year-old stylish player has been performing consistently in the last couple of seasons and had a dream season in the 2023 edition, scoring 890 runs at an average of 59.33 playing for the Gujarat Titans. Gill was appointed as the Titans' skipper in 2024 and has led them into the playoffs of the 2025 edition as well. He is once again one of the top run scorers for the team this year with 649 runs at an average of 54.08 to his name this season. Despite having a fantastic season, GT ended fourth in the league as they lost to Mumbai Indians in a do-or-die Eliminator clash.
