IPL 2023: 5 Players from INR 2 crore bracket who might go unsold

The dynamics in the IPL auction often decide a fate of a player in terms of monetary value. In the 2022 IPL auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad spent INR 7.75 crores for Romario Shepherd but could only field him in three matches while Kolkata Knight Riders spent INR 7.25 crores on Shivam Mavi last year but the player proved to be highly expensive with the ball and thus, the franchise had to drop him after six games. However, there are certain cricketers who despite being talented and in form, the franchises will be reluctant to spend their money on them. Given the history, the teams have learned to take safety measures these days and do a lot of research before bidding for a cricketer. This may actually result in five cricketers from the 2 crore bracket going unsold in the upcoming auction. Who are the cricketers and why? Let’s jump straight in - 5. Craig Overton The England bowling all-rounder Craig Overton has put himself in the 2 crore category but his T20 numbers have been very average to say the least. With 70 wickets to his name from the same number of matches in the shortest format of the game, the 28-year-old thus might find it difficult to find a place in any team in the IPL. Even in The Hundred last season, Overton played just one match picking two wickets. His lack of game time and inexperience in playing in the Indian sub-continent may eventually make the bidders hesitate at the auction table. When it comes to his batting, Overton can take the attack to the opposition but his consistency is something that the player needs to work on. In 70 matches so far, the Englishman scored 347 runs at a strike rate of 123.04. Thus, a team looking for a finisher in the death overs might look for other alternative options with better stats in the same price range. 4. Jamie Overton Craig’s brother Jamie too set his base price at 2 crores in the forthcoming IPL auction. Being a bowling all-rounder as well, Jamie picked up 67 wickets from 83 matches in T20 cricket. With an economy of 9.37, Jamie has proved to be really costly and thus, the franchises will be reluctant to go after him in the auction. The 28-year-old didn’t feature in a single match in The Hundred and his current form is not convincing enough for franchises to bid for the cricketer. He played only four matches in the last five months and this gives an idea about his match fitness at the moment. Now, just like Craig, Jamie has no experience playing in India and thus despite having pace, the teams will look for other options and more so, because of the base price he has set for himself. 3. Angelo Mathews The former Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews has lost his place in the national T20 team but given his record, the 35-year-old can still be a valuable addition to any of the squad. However, it’s highly unlikely that any of the franchises will spend 2 crores for a cricketer who didn’t feature in any T20 match in the last six months. In 173 matches he played in the shortest format of the game, Mathews scored 2788 runs at a strike rate of 119.55. His bowling skill can also give him an extra edge as he picked up 85 wickets in the same amount of matches. Now, despite his skill and what he brings to the game, Mathew’s age, form and relevancy in modern-day T20 cricket may put him on the back foot in the upcoming IPL auction. To make things worse, he is very much injury prone and might go unsold for the same reason. 2. Nathan Coulter-Nile The 35-year-old Nathan Coulter-Nile could have been a hot property in the IPL over the years but he kept sustaining injuries at regular intervals and couldn't become the player that he was touted to be. The Aussie quick picked up 170 wickets in 146 T20 matches at an economy rate of 7.78. In the IPL, Coulter-Nile has picked up 48 wickets from 39 matches and even managed to get his hands on the trophy with Mumbai Indians. In the 2022 season, he was part of the Rajasthan Royals franchise but right after the first game, Coulter-Nile got injured and was ruled out of the tournament. Thus, he often turns out to be a risk for the franchise and thus, it might be difficult for him to find a team this season. 1. Chris Lynn The charismatic Aussie batter Chris Lynn is in sublime form in the ongoing Abu Dhabi T10 League but despite that, the 32-year-old may get ignored in the upcoming IPL auction. With almost all the teams having their openers sorted for the next season, there’s no need for Lynn in the market. More so, because of his performance in the Indian conditions of late. His struggle to play swing is not a secret anymore and thus, he can be a liability on that price tag. His overall stats, however, reflects the quality he possesses. In 42 IPL games, Lynn scored 1329 runs at a strike rate of 140.63. Nevertheless, his past glory may not help him write a vibrant future and may remain unsold like in 2022.
