IPL 2023: 5 Players Mumbai Indians will eye to sign in the trading window

Indian Premier League 2022 was full of surprises and Mumbai Indians finishing at the bottom of the table was one of them. The five-time IPL champions struggled throughout the season and could only manage four wins out of 14 games. The poor showing by the Mumbai Indians at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction was also one of the reasons for their awful campaign. With teams gearing up for the next season, MI have some great opportunities to redeem themselves. The upcoming trading window is a golden chance for the most successful IPL franchise to fill at least one of the gaps in their squad. Let us look at the players Mumbai Indians will eye to sign in the trading window: 1. Manish Pandey Manish Pandey is among the prolific run-getters in the history of IPL. The 33-year-old has accumulated 3648 runs in 160 matches at a strike rate of 121.52. Mumbai Indians might look to add the veteran batter to bolster their batting. MI lacked a solid middle-order player who can shepherd the innings while the stroke makers can take the bowling apart. This role can be done expertly by Manish. The Indian batter’s addition will let the likes of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma play freely at the top. Manish played the last season for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and did not enjoy a great outing. He could only manage 88 runs in six games at a strike rate of 110. The ace batter did not get a longer rope due to the resurgence of Deepak Hooda at the top of the order. LSG have their bases covered on the batting front and might look to release the Nainital-born to free up 4.6 Cr. This could be a chance for MI to rope in the right-hand batter. 2. Shivam Mavi Shivam Mavi has been one of the most promising fast bowlers in the Indian circuit. Kolkata Knight Riders put a lot of faith in him and bought him again in the last year’s Mega Auction for a whopping 7.25 Cr. However, the 23-year-old failed to impress in IPL 2022. Mavi made six appearances for KKR and picked five wickets leaking runs at an economy of 10.32. The Knight Riders might look to release the youngster and free up a substantial amount. Mumbai, on the other hand, might look to grab the promising youngster into the squad. Last season, MI had a headache finding an Indian pacer to support Jasprit Bumrah and Mavi’s inclusion can fix the worries. The Uttar Pradesh-born can swing the ball at high speeds and could be MI’s strike-bowler at the powerplay. The young Indian quick is more than handy with the bat and his inclusion will increase the batting depth of the side. 3. Ravindra Jadeja Ravindra Jadeja had a turbulent season in IPL 2022. After handing him captaincy by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management, he was sacked from leadership duties mid-way through the tournament. The ace-batter had a poor outing with the bat as well and could accumulate only 116 runs in 10 matches with a strike rate of 118.37. There were talks of Jadeja being unhappy with the management and the rift between the veteran all-rounder and the administration seemed to have grown of late. The 33-year-old will likely part ways with CSK and MI might look to latch onto this opportunity to sign him in the trading window. The Saurashtra-born is arguably one of the best all-rounders in cricket across formats. MI can rope in the ace all-rounder to fulfill the role which Krunal Pandya earlier did for the side. The southpaw can play the role of a floater, can finish games for the side, and give crucial overs. Jadeja adds flexibility to the team and having someone of his caliber is any team’s dream. 4. Shahrukh Khan Shahrukh Khan has shown a lot of promise but has not been able to replicate it at the IPL. Punjab Kings roped the Chennai-born for an incredible sum of 9 Cr. But the power-hitter failed to make an impact in IPL 2022. Shahrukh played eight games and could only score 117 runs at a strike rate of 108.33. Punjab could look to release him and free up a huge sum to fill gaps in the squad. The Mumbai franchise can look to pick the 27-year-old to strengthen their batting lineup. Shahrukh has showcased his finishing prowess in the domestic circuit and will provide a good cushion in MI’s lower order. Moreover, with Kieron Pollard’s dwindling returns, the Indian power-hitter is a great option to have in the Mumbai lineup. 5. Navdeep Saini Navdeep Saini has been a constant figure in the IPL circuit over the last couple of years. The 29-year-old has also shown his mettle in the international arena and can be a great addition to Mumbai’s bowling lineup. MI’s bowling lineup lacked the bite last season and were not able to take wickets at regular intervals. Saini is someone who can bowl at any phase of the game and can rattle batters with his express pace. The speedster did not have a good outing the previous IPL season with the Rajasthan Royals and could be released. Saini got only two games for RR where he picked three wickets but conceded runs at an economy of 12. He was lower in the pecking order after Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Sen. The Haryana-born does not seem to be in Rajasthan’s plans and there lies an opening for the five-time IPL champions to sign the Indian seamer.
