IPL 2026: Which team has the strongest batting lineup?

Batting also takes centre stage in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and this season is no exception. Each of the 10 teams possess a batting lineup that is capable of chasing any given score if the conditions are right. Over the years, the average batting score keeps on increasing along with the number of fours and sixes hit in the tournament, making the bowlers’ job even more difficult than it already is in T20 cricket. The race of the Orange Cap remains incredibly close this year with a host of players vying for the coveted prize. Here are the 10 IPL teams ranked based on the batting squads they possess: 10. Punjab Kings Hats (or helmets) off! Shreyas Iyer and Marcus Stoinis get together after the win, Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians, IPL 2025 Qualifier 2, Ahmedabad, June 1, 2025 Punjab Kings (PBKS) finished runners up in the IPL last time around thanks to their talismanic captain Shreyas Iyer who scored 604 runs at an average of over 50. PBKS, however, would be coming into the new season with a lot of hopes on their skipper in the batting department. Though they performed well last year, the likes of Prabhsimran Singh, Shashank Singh, Priyansh Arya and Nehal Wadhera are lacking experience in the tournament, something which cannot be said about the other teams. They do, however, have exciting overseas batters in the form of Mitchell Owen, Marcus Stoinis and Marco Jansen who would be expected to have big seasons should PBKS want to replicate their successes from last time around. 9. Kolkata Knight Riders Rishabh Pant and Rinku Singh. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) seems to be in a bit of a transitional phase this time. They have made new additions to their side with the likes of Time Seifert, Finn Allen and Cameron Green coming into the squad. The three-time champions have experience and quality in their batting but it needs to be seen whether the new arrivals gel together or not. Rinku Singh remains KKR’s best batter and should have a huge season should the 2024 champions want to do well in the tournament. Captain Ajinkya Rahane had a great Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign for Mumbai but with him soon turning 38, there would always be a question of how much he can contribute at the top. 8. Lucknow Super Giants Mitchell-Marsh-and-Nicholas-Pooran. (Photo source: IPL) Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) top order is one of the finest at the 2026 IPL season. They possess Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant all in their top four. However, their batting does not hold the same strength after these swashbuckling batters. Should the top four fail, the pressure on the young shoulders of Abdul Samad and Ayush Badoni would increase drastically. Pant’s form is also a concern for LSG. Though he scored an unbeaten hundred last time around, the new captain only managed 269 runs, his lowest tally in the IPL since his debut campaign back in 2016. 7. Delhi Capitals Axar Patel, KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Delhi Capitals (DC) have been dealt with a major blow ahead of the new IPL season with England opener Ben Duckett pulling out of the tournament to focus on his international career. DC, however, do have a core of good batters with IPL pedigree and should not miss Duckett’s services a lot. The team from the capital have a solid batter in each position necessary. The likes of KL Rahul, Nitish Rana, Tristan Stubbs and Axar Patel have great track records in the IPL while the addition of David Miller will give them a great finishing option along with the hard-hitting Ashutosh Sharma. Depending on the composition of their squad, DC could either open with Pathum Nissanka or Prthivi Shaw alongside Rahul as an attacking opener. 6. Rajasthan Royals Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal (Source: Rajasthan Royals/Instagram) The eyeballs will firmly be on Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. IPL 2026 season will be the true test for Suryavanshi after a great debut campaign last time around, while Jaiswal will have a point to prove after not getting picked in India’s T20 World Cup squad. RR, though, will have a massive hole to fill in the absence of Sanju Samson. This could allow the likes of Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag to come into their own and become RR’s talisman. Parag has had two excellent seasons in Jaipur, scoring 966 runs. The 24-year-old, however, is now the franchise’s captain and will have a lot of expectations on his shoulder to continue delivering with the bat. RR’s overseas batting is once again led by Shimron Hetymer. The 2008 champions will feel the absence of the injured Sam Curran in the lower-middle order. They do have an adequate replacement in the form of Donovon Ferreira, who batted with a strike-rate of 235.06 at The Hundred 2025. 5. Gujarat Titans Jos-Buttler-and-Shubman-Gill. (Photo source: IPL) Gujarat Titans (GT) are heavily reliant on their top three consisting of skipper Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler and rightfully so. The trio scored 1,947 runs combined last season as the 2022 champions finished third in the standings. GT’s middle order could comprise of the likes of Washington Sundar, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia and one of either Glenn Phillips and Jason Holder. Should they need another overseas batter in their playing XI, they could go with Tom Banton, who is an excellent T20 player, striking at upwards of 140 in his career in the shortest format. 4. Chennai Super Kings Ayush Mhatre. (Photo source: Prakash Singh/Getty Images) Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have completely revitalised their batting unit ahead of the 2026 IPL season. The emergence of Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis towards the second half of last season was a huge blessing in disguise. Mhatre scored at a strike-rate of 189 while Brevis attacked at 180 in 2025. CSK’s batting has been elevated by the addition of Sanju Samson. The former RR captain is one of IPL’s modern-day greats and is in the form of his life. The 31-year-old was the Player of the Tournament at the recently-concluded 2026 T20 World Cup where he guided India to the title. The five-time champions’ batting will also be bolstered by the return of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the presence of youngsters Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer, for whom CSK paid a combined INR 28.40 crore. 3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru Virat-Kohli-and-Phil-Salt. (Photo source: IPL) Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) kept their title-winning core intact for 2026. This means that they have one of the strongest batting lineups in the tournament this year. With Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Devdutt Padikkal and Rajat Patidat in their top four, they can do hard early in their innings knowing that they have got great depth. Their lower order then comprises hard-hitting duo of Romario Shepherd and Tim David, who scored at an astounding strike-rate of 291.66 and 185.14, respectively, last year. RCB also possess one of world cricket's brightest talents in Jacob Bethell in their ranks. The 22-year-old recently rose to the occasion during the T20 World Cup where he scored 105 from just 48 balls to nearly chase down 254 in the semi-final against eventual champions India. 2. Mumbai Indians Rohit-Sharma. (Photo source: IPL) Coming into the 2026 IPL with one of the strongest squads, it is no surprise to see Mumbai Indians (MI) be so high up in the rankings possessing the best batters. MI have an Indian core to envy of all other sides in the tournament. The five-time champions’ batting lineup could include Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir. With the additions of Quinton de Kock, Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner, MI possess a combination of both style and power in their ranks. 1. Sunrisers Hyderabad Abhishek-Sharma-and-Travis-Head. (Photo source: IPL) Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have the most feared batting lineups at the 2026 IPL. On their given day, the 2016 champions are well capable of posting even 300 with a hard-hitting lineup at their disposal. A dangerous squad including Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy has been boosted by the addition of Liam Livingstone. Kishan’s form is a big boost for SRH coming into the tournament. He captained Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) title whilst ending the tournament as the leading runs scorer. He then ended the 2026 T20 World Cup with 317 at a strike-rate of 193.29. SRH also have depth in the squad with Salil Arora the most exciting young prospect to join them ahead of the new season. He ended SMAT with 358 runs at an eyewatering strike-rate of 198.88.
