T20 World Cup 2022: Injured XI of the tournament

The ICC T20 World Cup is underway with the First-Round fixtures that will be followed by the Super 12 matches commencing on October 22, Saturday in Australia. Players dream to represent their national side in the grand stage and etch their names in the history books. Missing out on an opportunity like the showpiece event due to an injury could be one of the worst feelings ever for a player. The sides participating in the marquee tournament make it a point to keep fitness levels at peak to help compete for the title. However, there have been many big stars who will miss out on the World Cup due to an injury that will keep them in the sidelines. Unfortunately, this year’s edition has already seen many players who will miss out on the competition down under and the management had to skip few names unwillingly due to injuries concerns. T20 World Cup 2022: Injured XI 1. Josh Inglis (wk) Australia Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is known for his sharp work behind the stumps and innovative batting skills. The player clawed his way into the national setup following his impressive display in the teams he has represented. The defending champions had his services included in the T20 World Cup squad and were hoping for him to be an integral part of the set up. However, Inglis suffered a bizarre injury to his hand while playing golf. The bizarre incident turned worse what was supposed to be a relaxing day off from training. The player sustained a deep cut to his right hand when the handle of the club broke unexpectedly at the New South Wales Golf Club. Inglis is ruled out of World Cup already and his replacement is expected to be announced soon. 2. Danushka Gunathilaka The batting all-rounder has been seen as a regular at the top of the order for the Lankan Lions. The player understands perfectly when the side needs to get crucial runs on the board and can keep the scoreboard ticking. The inclusion of Danushka Gunathilaka in the squad gave the Lions an all-rounder who could potentially add threat and change the complexion of the game at a given point. However, the player endured a hamstring injury and was kept out of the playing XI against UAE. The management earlier deemed his injury to be a mild one but Gunathilaka was later ruled out with Ashen Bandar replacing him in the line-up. 3. Jonny Bairstow (c) Jonny Bairstow is one of the biggies who is ruled out of the T20 World Cup that has handed England a major setback. Like Inglis, Bairstow too endured a freak injury while playing golf and suffered a broken fibula in three places and dislocated his ankle. The explosive batter was in sparkling form before the setback and had to undergo a surgery. Bairstow provided a timeline for his return and said that most probably he will return sometime in 2023. The batter would have broken the shackles quite comfortably for the English side. However, the side will hope that the player recovers and hands them a major boost for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. 4. Rassie van der Dussen The Protean broke his index finger while fielding during a Test match against England at the famous Old Trafford. The timing of the injury was such that Rasssie van der Dussen was left out of the series against India and for the mega event down under. Earlier in a press briefing CSA's convenor of selectors said "Rassie - we are all aware that he broke his finger a week ago. He went for surgery. It will take up to six weeks before he has recovered. Unfortunately, the timing of his injury didn't come at the right time." The door was wide open for Kolpak-returnee Rilee Rossouw in the squad following Van der Dussen’s absence. Rossouw could play crucial role in that top order for South Africa, but it remains to be seen if he can fill in the spot well. 5. Daryl Mitchell Daryl Mitchell got hit on the little finger of his right hand while batting in the nets ahead of the tri-series against Bangladesh and Pakistan in Christchurch. The management had to subsequently rule him out of the series and his involvement in the T20 World Cup was also in doubt at the time. The player is on course to miss the opening clash against hosts and defending champions Australia. However, head coach Gary Stead is optimistic that Mitchell will be available for their second match against Afghanistan. The injury meant that the side would without their first choice XI and will take a call on his replacement after taking into account the conditions in Sydney. 6. Ravindra Jadeja One of the most crucial all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja was left out of the Rohit Sharma led squad following a knee injury. The star all-rounder tried to balance himself on a ski-board as part of water-based training activity, but it went horribly wrong. Jadeja had already been struggling with his knee and missed out on the three T20Is against West Indies with knee issues. But it was the team activity that was the final nail in the coffin for the southpaw to end his dreams of playing in the T20 World Cup. India will be relying on the services of Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel to fire all cylinders both with the bat and ball in the World Cup. 7. Dwaine Pretorius South Africa suffered a major blow after all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius, sustained a fracture to his left thumb. The Protean was the lynchpin for the T20I side who can hand breakthroughs to the side during critical times of the matches. The national side will miss the services of Pretorius who offers outswingers and lower order runs. “The nature of the injury requires surgical intervention and Dwaine will consult the Cricket South Africa designated hand surgeon on arrival in South Africa,” said CSA chief medical officer Dr. Shuaib Manjra. Marco Jansen has got the nod ahead of Andile Phehlukwayo to replace the injured all-rounder for the T20 World Cup 2022. 8. Dushmantha Chameera Injury woes continue to mount for Sri Lanka as Dushmantha Chameera became the latest addition to the list of players who are out injured. The Lankan Lions are dealing with quite a few blows even before qualifying for the regular group stage matches. The speedster is officially ruled out of the crunch First-Round clash against the Netherlands after sustaining a calf strain. Chameera decked UAE’s top order in the clash which kept their hopes alive to seal a spot in the group stage following which the player endured the injury. It is understood that the player may be out of contention for longer than just the T20 World Cup as it is still yet to be determined. 9. Reece Topley On Tuesday, it was announced that Topley "rolled his ankle" after standing on a boundary cushion during a fielding drill ahead of the warm up match against Pakistan. The prognosis was initially optimistic of the chances of playing in the national side’s tournament opener. However, after carefully being assessed by the medical team, the injury is understood to be worse than expected. The scans have deemed the left-arm seamer unfit for participation in the T20 World Cup. Tymal Mills is set to join the English squad as a replacement for the injured player. His addition would bring experience into the side, however, he has not played any cricket since August 10 after getting an operation for an injury that blighted his summer of 2022. 10. Dilshan Madhushanka The left-arm seamer sustained a quadriceps tear just prior to their first match of the tournament. The pacer is known to bring lively pace and swing to the powerplay overs that damages the progress of the rival side. Despite their Asia Cup victory, Sri Lanka still needs to seal the group stage spot winning the rest of the matches of the First-Round. However, having lost their two top pacers (Madhushanka and Chameera), things have just become slightly tricky for the Lankan Lions. The left arm pacer was to add a lot to the side in their campaign in the marquee event but will now have to be in the sidelines. 11. Jasprit Bumrah The seamer from team India was to be the lead bowler in the death overs in their campaign ahead of the group stage matches. However, Jasprit Bumrah is down with a back injury and is officially ruled out of the World Cup. The right-arm speedster was initially hopeful to make a return just in time for the tournament only for the board to eventually drop him. The management decided to replace him with standby player and veteran pacer Mohammed Shami. While India would have certainly enjoyed the services of Bumrah towards the death, Shami in his first warm up match against Australia showed why he can be a good fit.
