The 2026 season of the Indian Premier League has come to a close, with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully defending their title after being the dominant team in the tournament. The 2026 season has once again seen brilliant captains take the fore, leading their teams from the front on the field and with their contributions. Leaders have stepped up with tactical acumen, coming un clutch with their decision-making in moments of pressure. Here are the top five captains of IPL 2026: 5. Shreyas Iyer - Punjab Kings Shreyas Iyer. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) It would be unfair not to include him in this list, as a major reason for Shreyas Iyer's recent appointment as the captain of the Indian Men's T20I side is his record in the IPL. Despite the Punjab Kings having a difficult season, the batter has had a good run as captain, contributing with key decisions and managing his resources brilliantly. He has helped establish the Punjab Kings as a top threat in the IPL and has formed a reliable partnership with coach Ricky Ponting. Iyer has also contributed with vital runs in the season for the Kings. He scored 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81, scoring five half-centuries and one century, his first in the IPL. He remained unbeaten with half-centuries against the Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians and scored his century unbeaten in a chase against the Lucknow Super Giants, leading from the front with the bat. 4. Ajinkya Rahane - Kolkata Knight Riders Sunil Narine & Ajinkya Rahane (Source : IPL/X) Ajinkya Rahane oversaw one of the most dramatic turnarounds in IPL history, keeping the Kolkata Knight Riders in the hunt for the playoffs till the end of the season. His leadership came under the scanner during the early part of the season, when the Knight Riders were winless in their opening six games. Dented by injuries to premier fast bowlers, Rahane managed his bowlers brilliantly, profiling the bowlers according to their strengths. With the bat, Rahane had an ordinary season, scoring 335 runs at a strike rate of 135.08. He scored two half-centuries, coming in their first and last game of the season. Rahane showed his vast experience while leading the team, reminiscent of some of the famous victories India has had under the batter. 3. Riyan Parag - Rajasthan Royals Riyan Parag (rajasthanroyals on IG) Riyan Parag has come into his own as the captain of the Rajasthan Royals. Made full-time skipper in 2026 after the departure of Sanju Samson to the Chennai Super Kings, much responsibility fell on Parag's shoulders to guide and mould a team with youngsters. And he executed his roles successfully, managing his bowlers brilliantly in the field. A key moment which showed his acumen was his decision to hold back Jofra Archer and Tushar Deshpande for the final two overs against the Gujarat Titans, with the pair defending 20 runs from the final two overs against a well-set Rashid Khan. Parag did not have a significantly stellar season with the bat, scoring 309 runs at a strike rate of 157.65, with two half-centuries, which included a well-made 90 against the Delhi Capitals in Jaipur. 2. The batter has seamlessly transitioned that into leading the Gujarat Titans to a place in the final. He has been smart with his planning, use of resources and decision-making on the field, which has earned plaudits from experts and former players. Playing with a chip on his shoulder after being dropped from India's T20I side for the 2026 T20 World Cup, Gill did not just step up on the field, but with the bat as well. He was the second-highest run-scorer of the season, scoring 732 runs at a strike rate of 163.03 with six half-centuries and one brilliant century in Qualifier 2 against the Rajasthan Royals. 1. Rajat Patidar - Royal Challengers Bengaluru Rajat Patidar (Source: IPL) Rajat Patidar has now joined an illustrious list of captains in the IPL by successfully defending the title he led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to in 2025. He joins Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, legendary captains who have ten titles between them, as the only leaders to successfully defend the IPL crown. He has formed a successful partnership with coach Andy Flower and mentor Dinesh Karthik, and has been excellent in his use of his resources on the field. Along with this, Patidar has had a stellar season with the bat, scoring 501 runs at a blistering strike rate of 192.69, with five half-centuries. He has excelled in a middle-order enforcer role, piling on runs in the middle order. A feared spin-hitter, he has taken his intent up by multiple gears, striking at 206.7 against spin, and has improved his scoring against pace, striking at 118.5.
