New South Wales all-rounder Jack Edwards has earned his maiden international call-up, joining Australia’s ODI squad for the final match against India in Sydney. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis have been declared fit to return for the latter stages of the upcoming T20I series, while young Western Australian pacer Mahli Beardman has also been included in the T20I squad.

Cricket Australia confirmed several changes to both the ODI and T20I squads on Friday. Marnus Labuschagne has been released from the ODI squad ahead of the third match at the SCG to prepare for Queensland’s Sheffield Shield clash against New South Wales at the Gabba, starting Tuesday.

"Maxwell will return from a fractured wrist for the last three games of the series while Dwarshuis has been brought in to return for games four and five," Cricket Australia stated in an official media statement on Friday, October 24.

"Josh Philippe has also been added to the T20 squad. Mahli Beardman has been added from game three onwards with Josh Hazlewood departing after game two and Sean Abbott post-game three to prepare for the fourth round of Sheffield Shield," the release read further.

Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott will miss the final stages of the T20I series to feature in New South Wales’ Shield match against Victoria, beginning November 10 at the SCG. Hazlewood will only participate in the first two T20Is, while Abbott, who is recovering from split webbing on his hand, will leave the squad after the third T20I in Hobart.

Matthew Kuhnemann, who featured in the opening ODI in Perth but missed the second in Adelaide when Adam Zampa returned, has been recalled for the Sydney fixture alongside Edwards. Josh Philippe, who played the first ODI before making way for Alex Carey, has been added to the T20I squad as a backup wicketkeeper with Josh Inglis still recovering from a calf strain.

Maxwell is set to return for the final three T20Is after missing the first two due to a wrist fracture sustained while bowling in the nets in New Zealand last month. Dwarshuis, who was sidelined with a calf injury, will be available for the fourth and fifth T20Is in Queensland.

The inclusion of Beardman is one of the more surprising moves. The young quick was a late injury replacement during Australia’s 2024 white-ball tour of England, despite having played just one List A match for Western Australia. After overcoming stress fractures during the winter, Beardman has made an impressive start to his T20 and List A career with Perth Scorchers and Western Australia.

Edwards’ selection for the ODI squad follows a string of strong performances for Australia A during the recent tour of India. His addition gives the selectors a chance to experiment with an all-rounder-heavy line-up in the dead rubber at the SCG, potentially allowing Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc to rest, given the tight turnaround between the second and third ODIs.
