Basit Ali, who averaged 26.81 in Tests, disapproves Ravindra Jadeja's approach after Lord's loss

Former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali felt India star Ravindra Jadeja should have taken Javed Miandad's advice into consideration while batting on the final day of the third Test of the ongoing five-match series against England. Basit reflected on the former Pakistan legend's advice for batters while playing along with tail-enders on Day 5 against the Ben Stokes-led side.

The ex cricketer felt that the experienced batter like Jadeja should have batted a touch more aggressively while in the middle, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj at the other end, as the tourists were chasing 193 on the final day of the all-important match.

"Were the fielders outside the circle? If yes, then there isn’t much he could have done. However, Javed Miandad once said that when you are batting with the tail and the field comes in, go for boundaries in the last two balls of the over. Bumrah and Siraj were doing a good job, and he was farming strike and trusting them enough to make them face 2–3 balls every over. So, if he was confident of them hanging around, he should have gone after boundaries. He should have listened to Miandad,” he shared in a video on his YouTube channel.

The Karachi-born further opined that the Saurashtra all-rounder should have batted similar to Ben Stokes' Ashes 2019 knock against Australia, considering the amount of skills and big-hitting technique he possessed. The cricketer-turned-YouTuber also doubted Jadeja's experience, claiming that a player who lacks game time can play the way he did at Lord's.

Yeh Jadeja ka pehla Test match tha kya (Was this Jadeja’s first Test match)? Jadeja could have taken a few more chances. When Shoaib Bashir or Joe Root was bowling, he just left it. They were flighting the ball, but Jadeja did not charge. He should have struck a few sixes down the ground, at least. Slog sweeps went missing too. Had he shown a little more courage, he could have taken India to a win. When Ben Stokes had won that game against Australia at the Ashes, I felt he was about to do the same,” he noted further in the same video.

India are currently trailing 2-1 with a couple of matches to go. The Shubman Gill-led unit would be aiming at getting back on track and level the series after a hard-fought clash at Lord's. The fourth game is scheduled to be played at Old Trafford, Manchester, starting July 23. From there, the teams will come back to London to play the fifth and final Test at The Oval.
