BBL 2025-26: Nic Maddinson leaves cancer behind to sign with Sydney Thunder
Maddinson, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier in the year, finished a total of nine weeks of chemotherapy in July.
The soon-to-be 34-year-old Nic Maddinson could return to competitive cricket while featuring for Sydney Thunder in the 2025-26 instalment of the Big Bash League. Maddinson, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier in the year, finished a total of nine weeks of chemotherapy in July, and has now readied himself to hit the field.
The top-order batter mentioned that he was happy to be re-signed by the side. He hoped to contribute meaningfully as far as the upcoming season is concerned after missing the entire previous BBL season due to a hand injury.
"I'm really happy to be staying with Thunder. There's been a few setbacks for myself lately, but I've had amazing support from my friends, family and the club. Now I'm just keen to lock in, get the season started and hopefully help the boys go one better than last year," stated Maddinson, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Sydney Thunder's general manager Trent Copeland was happy that the batter was back and voiced that the franchise was confident that Maddinson will make a strong comeback as a batter and an experienced campaigner.
"We are pleased to have Maddo re-sign with us at Sydney Thunder. I know how eager he was to play in front of the Thunder Nation before his injury, and I know that eagerness has doubled since then. We're backing Maddo to make a real impact this season, both at the crease and through his leadership around the team," noted Copeland.

Maddison has represented three sides throughout his BBL career up until now. He started off while playing for Sydney Sixers and ended up staying for seven seasons with them. The left-handed batter then went onto represent Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades for three seasons apiece, with the Thunder dugout becoming his fourth home.
The 15th edition of the top-ranked T20 league is scheduled to commence on December 14. The Thunder, who finished as the title-winning team of the 2015-16 iteration, finished as runners-up in the previous edition of the tournament. They will be aiming at going all the way this time around.
