The SA20 2025 auction is currently underway, and South African youngster Dewald Brevis has made history by becoming the most expensive buy in the tournament’s history. Brevis is known for his explosive batting, was in fiery form, prompting an intense bidding war among franchises eager to acquire his services.

The battle for Brevis was particularly intense between the Pretoria Capitals and the Joburg Super Kings. In the end, it was the Pretoria Capitals who emerged victorious, securing the young star for an astonishing 16.50 million Rand, which is approximately INR 8.30 crore. Prior to this, Brevis’ Proteas teammate, Aiden Markram, had briefly held the title of the most expensive player when he was sold for INR 7 crore to Durban’s Super Giants. However, Brevis quickly surpassed this record.

The bidding war for Brevis was a highlight of the auction. Joburg Super Kings had a budget of 21.5 million Rand and pushed their offer up to 16.4 million before deciding to pull out, ultimately allowing the Pretoria Capitals to secure Brevis. Before the mega auction, the record for the most expensive player was held by middle-order batter Tristan Stubbs, who was sold to Sunrisers Eastern Cape for 9.2 million Rand. This record was briefly broken by Markram and then decisively by Brevis.

Brevis’ reputation has been rapidly growing in recent times. He initially gained attention in the Indian Premier League 2025, where he was brought in as an injury replacement player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In his stint with CSK, he left a lasting impression, scoring 225 runs in six matches at a remarkable strike rate of 180. Despite CSK not performing at their best overall, Brevis stood out as a consistent performer.

Additionally, Brevis showcased his talent in international cricket during the recently concluded T20I series against Australia. He scored his maiden T20I century with a strike rate of 204, underlining his capability as a formidable T20 player.
