ENG vs IND 2025: Michael Vaughan credits Shubman Gill for concentration, dedication in Edgbaston Test
Gill top scored for India with 269 in the first innings.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan was hugely satisfied with the way Shubman Gill batted to bring up his maiden double century in Tests. The Indian captain had smashed a domination double ton to end his innings in the second Test against England with 269 off 387 balls, laced with 30 boundaries and three maximums. Vaughan was satisfied with the way Gill batted under pressure and pulled his team out of trouble with his composure.
The cricketer-turned commentator told that despite the wicket being flat and easy to bat, the Punjab batter did not get carried away and remained high on concentration. The former cricketer was also impressed by the amount of dedication shown by the ace batter on a surface where batters tend to make mistakes and play risky drives or lofted hits.
"When you see someone play so well, the first thing, and we have all been talking about it, that it is a flat wicket. When England went out to bat, they lost three wickets because they made three mistakes, Shubman Gill did not make a mistake. So, I am going to give him a huge amount of credit for his concentration, his dedication to making sure that he can stay in, and then the pure stroke play," Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
"I've seen many many great innings, and that is up there with those great innings, because someone that is 0-1 down in the series, is captaining his country for the second time, the pressure is on, the talk of the team being a negative one, to walk out and score that amount of runs and put you team in such a dominating position to allow your bowlers to run in hard for an hour and get three wickets, that is why I rank it as such a high valued innings," he added.

This is Gill's time to create legacy: Vaughan
Vaughan further mentioned that the subtle changes in technique that have saved him from his vulnerabilities of the past are praiseworthy. Despite the challenges put on by the England bowlers, Shubman Gill, with the technique that he has, ensured to maintain solidarity in his stance at the crease. The former batter further told that Gill's time has come to create a legacy not just as a batter, but also as a leader for the Indian team.
"England have tried challenging that lbw (Leg Before Wicket) that Gill has been vulnerable to in the past, but I think at the minute his technique is so good that he's given him the chance to just say, 'You know what, you can bowl whatever you want, my technique will look after me.' This is his time to create a legacy as a leader, and as a batter," Vaughan concluded.
