James Anderson receives knighthood for services to cricket
James Anderson has taken a total of 991 wickets across all three formats for England.
England’s veteran fast bowler James Anderson has been knighted for his exceptional services to cricket, marking a historic milestone in a career that has spanned more than two decades. The 43-year-old, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker, received the honour from the Princess Royal during a ceremony at Windsor Castle.
Anderson was named in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours list earlier this year, becoming the only sportsperson to be recognised. His knighthood places him among an elite group of English cricket icons, joining Sir Ian Botham, Sir Geoffrey Boycott, Sir Alastair Cook, and Sir Andrew Strauss. Over a glittering 22-year international career, Anderson redefined fast bowling with his precision, swing, and adaptability.
The right-arm pacer claimed 704 wickets in 188 Tests, making him the most successful pace bowler in Test history. Only Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne have taken more. His consistency, longevity, and ability to excel in all conditions made him a cornerstone of England’s success across generations. Anderson brought his Test career to a close in July 2024 after an emotional farewell at Lord’s, drawing tributes from players and fans around the world. Yet, his cricketing journey is far from over.
He continues to represent his boyhood club, Lancashire, and is reportedly in talks over a one-year extension that could see him play into the 2026 season, beyond his 44th birthday. Throughout his career, Anderson’s dedication, professionalism, and calm leadership have set new standards for fast bowlers.
He played a key role in several of England’s greatest Test triumphs, including multiple Ashes victories, and formed a formidable partnership with Stuart Broad, the foundation of England’s bowling attack for over a decade. His knighthood serves as a fitting tribute to a player who combined skill, perseverance, and grace, standing as a true symbol of excellence and endurance in world cricket.
