ICC expresses sadness at passing of Afghanistan umpire Bismillah Jan Shinwari

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced with deep sorrow the passing of esteemed Afghan and international cricket umpire Bismillah Jan Shinwari, who died at the age of 41 following a prolonged illness.

Shinwari, a respected figure in Afghanistan's cricketing circles, stood in 34 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 26 T20 Internationals (T20Is) during his international career. He also officiated in 51 List A, 31 First-Class, and 96 domestic T20 matches, earning recognition for his dedication and integrity on the field.

His most recent international assignment was during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Al Amerat, Oman, in February this year. 

"ACB’s leadership, staff, and the entire AfghanAtalan family are deeply shocked and saddened by the demise of Bismillah Jan Shinwari (1984–2025), a respected member of Afghanistan’s elite umpiring panel," a statement read.

“We pray that the Almighty Allah (SWT) grants him the highest ranks in Jannah and gives patience and strength to his loved ones during this difficult time,” the board extended condolences.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) also expressed its sorrow over the passing of Shinwari. ICC Chairman Jay Shah mourned Shinwari’s untimely demise and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

"Bismillah was a prominent umpire respected by players, peers, and officials alike. He was a regular on the international cricket circuit and had a long career ahead of him. His contributions to the game were huge, and he will be deeply missed by the cricket community. We are profoundly saddened by this loss and extend our condolences to his family and loved ones," Shah said.

Shinwari leaves behind a legacy of service and excellence in Afghan cricket. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him.
