IND vs WI 2026: Ravindra Jadeja will have to bowl 10 overs and pick wickets, says Aakash Chopra

India announced its squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies on September 16, 2026, with Ravindra Jadeja included in the probable XI at position 6. The squad is set to assemble in Thiruvananthapuram by September 24. Jadeja's inclusion marks his return to the ODI format after being omitted from fixtures following the ODI series against New Zealand earlier in 2026, with his last ODI appearance coming on January 18, 2026 against New Zealand.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has highlighted the significance of the West Indies series for Jadeja's international career. Chopra stated that the all-rounder faces a critical juncture as he competes for a spot in India's World Cup squad for South Africa. With Axar Patel currently on Asian Games duty in Japan, Jadeja has an opportunity to stake his claim in the middle order and bowling department.

"It will be a big opportunity for Jadeja. You might think why would there be any challenge given where he is in his career as he has a celebrated career. But he is not playing a lot of ODIs. He is not there in any series. Now there is no Axar so he is back," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

"It is important for him. The last time he played, he was not picking wickets. He will have to bowl ten overs and pick wickets if he wants to stay relevant and stay in the race as the World Cup is in South Africa. Only one of Axar or Jadeja will go and right now, Axar is slightly ahead in that race," he added.

Chopra's assessment underscores the competitive nature of the all-rounder selection for India's World Cup campaign. The absence of Axar Patel due to Asian Games commitments has created space for Jadeja to demonstrate his value across both batting and bowling. Chopra noted that Jadeja's recent ODI performances have not yielded the wickets expected from a player of his calibre, making the West Indies series a crucial platform for him to regain form and confidence.

He also conceded that it will be an important series for all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. He was removed from the Asian Games squad and included in the ODIs against the Caribbeans.

"It will be an important series for Nitish Kumar Reddy as well. As it is ODIs, he might get to bat more at six and a few more overs. It will also be an opportunity for some fast bowlers like Gurnoor Brar, Siraj, and Krishna. I do not see Nabi playing. I don't think he will make it. There will be no batting at eight but India will have to bite the bullet," said Chopra.
