IPL 2024: Matheesha Pathirana's one-handed stunner leaves David Warner in disbelief
Pathirana jumped to his full height at short third man to dismiss David Warner.
Sri Lanka and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana took a stunning catch to dismiss Delhi Capitals’ David Warner during Match 13 of IPL 2024 on Sunday, March 31 in Visakhapatnam. Warner had got DC off to a sensational start adding 93 runs for the first wicket off 57 balls with new opening partner Prithvi Shaw.
The southpaw had completed his half-century off just 32 balls and had set himself up for a big knock before Pathirana’s brilliance in the field led to his downfall. Batting on 52, the DC opener tried to guide Mustafizur Rahman towards the third man with a reverse scoop. However, Pathirana, who was stationed at short-third man, took a mind-boggling catch diving to his right and ended Warner’s innings. His effort left everyone stunned as fans already began calling it the ‘catch of the season’.

After taking a stunning catch, Pathirana further did the damage with the ball with his double wicket second over. The 21-year-old made a brilliant comeback after being hit for a boundary by Mitchell Marsh on the third ball as he shattered his stumps on the very next delivery with a searing yorker bowled at 150 km/h.

The Australian all-rounder didn’t have much time to react as he was cleverly set up by 135 km/h paced deliveries bowled in the over. Two balls later, he castled Tristan Stubbs (0 off 2) with another thunderous yorker leaving DC reeling at 134/4 after 15 overs. After two quick wickets, Delhi Captain Rishabh Pant took matters into his own hands and scored his first half-century (51 off 32) since his comeback.
He was eventually dismissed by Pathirana in the penultimate over of the innings who finished with figures of 3/31 in four overs. As a result, DC finished their innings on 191/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
