MS Dhoni didn't play a single game in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 as he struggled with multiple injury concerns. His absence was palpable as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to take his team to the playoffs. For three years in a row, CSK have not been able to progress beyond the league phase.

A calf strain initially forced Dhoni to watch CSK's struggles from the sidelines. While he was involved with the team and even attended matches from the dugout, his experience on the field was sorely missed by the five-time champions. It seemed that Dhoni would play at least a couple of matches at the back end of the season. However, that possibility was ruled out when he sustained a thumb injury.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said that there hasn't been any discussion with MS Dhoni regarding his future plans. However, the former asserted that the legendary cricketer would be given a free hand in deciding whether he wants to continue as a player. He added that the door is also open for him in a coaching or mentorship role.

“We have not discussed anything with MS as of now. MS takes his decisions on his own, and we respect that,” Kasi said while speaking to RevSportz after CSK's abysmal campaign came to an end.

“We would always like to have him as a permanent fixture at CSK in whatever capacity — be it as a player, coach or mentor, whatever he would like. Any decision depends on him," he added.

Despite a disappointing season with the bat and as a captain, Ruturaj garnered support from Kasi. The latter credited head coach Stephen Fleming and Dhoni for developing Ruturaj into a very calm captain.

“Ruturaj took over from MS after watching him closely for three to four years. MS and Fleming have developed Ruturaj into a very calm captain. I am sure that in the coming years, he will embody those qualities even more,” he added.
