New Zealand domestic season to kick off on October 28 with Ford Trophy opener

New Zealand's 2026-27 domestic season will get under way on October 28 when defending Ford Trophy champions Central Districts host Northern Districts at Saxton Oval in Nelson. The fixture marks the third successive season in which the Ford Trophy has been used to open the domestic calendar, following the same approach in 2024-25 and 2025-26.

The first round of the men's competition will also feature Auckland taking on Canterbury and Wellington facing Otago, giving fans across the country early-season List A cricket from the opening weekend. The women's Hallyburton Johnstone Shield will follow on November 14, with defending champions Northern Districts meeting Central Hinds at Fitzherbert Park in Palmerston North.

A total of 14 venues will host matches across both the men's and women's competitions this summer. Among the notable returns is Auckland's Colin Maiden Park, which comes back into the rota for the first time since 2023 after a period of ground redevelopment.

How is the Ford Trophy schedule structured across the season?

The men's Ford Trophy will be played across ten rounds. The first five rounds are scheduled for October and November, after which the competition pauses to accommodate the Plunket Shield and Super Smash. The remaining rounds will resume in February before the season concludes at Finals Weekend, which will be held at the Cello Basin Reserve.

The Plunket Shield schedule is due to be announced on September 2, while the Super Smash schedule is expected to follow in late September. The sequencing is designed to ensure that domestic cricket runs alongside the international summer programme without significant overlap.

"The combined Finals Weekend concept continues to be a success and it's exciting to be bringing it back to the Cello Basin Reserve this summer. This schedule also dovetails nicely with our international summer, meaning there's top-class cricket on offer right through the peak summer cricket months," said NZC chief cricket operations officer Catherine Campbell said as quoted by Cricinfo.

With 14 grounds confirmed across the men's and women's schedules, matches will be spread across a wide range of regional centres. Colin Maiden Park's return to the fixture list adds an established Auckland venue back into the mix after its absence during redevelopment work since 2023.

The breadth of the schedule means supporters in multiple regions will have the opportunity to watch domestic cricket close to home during the peak summer months. The Hallyburton Johnstone Shield opener at Fitzherbert Park in Palmerston North reflects the continued effort to take women's cricket to regional venues across the country.

"No matter where you live in Aotearoa [the Maori name for New Zealand], there's a good chance a Ford Trophy or Hallyburton Johnstone Shield match is coming to a ground near you this summer. This year's schedule once again gives fans the chance to watch our best domestic talent up close at some fantastic regional venues," Campbell said.
