Former New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite has been confirmed as head coach of Canterbury Women for the upcoming domestic season, stepping into the role vacated by Rhys Morgan. No other domestic women's team in New Zealand will be led by a female head coach this summer, making her appointment a notable first in the current landscape of the country's domestic cricket structure.
Satterthwaite takes charge of a side she represented as a player until the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield in 2023, having stepped away from New Zealand domestic cricket at the close of the 2022-23 campaign. Morgan, whom she succeeds, spent six years in the position and guided Canterbury to two Super Smash titles, in 2020-21 and 2022-23, along with the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield crown in 2020-21.
Her transition into coaching has been gradual and deliberate. In December last year, she was appointed as the female pathway lead at Canterbury, a role that placed her at the centre of developing the next generation of players in the region before she was elevated to the senior head coaching position.

What coaching experience does Satterthwaite bring to the role?
Satterthwaite retired from international cricket in 2022 after 15 years in the New Zealand setup, during which she featured in 145 ODIs and 111 T20Is. Her first significant move into coaching came when she joined the Adelaide Strikers in the Women's Big Bash League as assistant coach, giving her exposure to a high-performance environment away from New Zealand.
As a batter, she built a record at Canterbury that stood for two decades. She finished as the side's all-time leading run-scorer in domestic one-day cricket with 5147 runs across 20 years before Frankie Mackay eventually surpassed that mark. In T20 cricket for Canterbury, her tally of 2925 runs remains the highest by any player for the side.
Her international record carries a distinction shared by only one other cricketer in history. Satterthwaite is the only woman to have scored four consecutive ODI centuries, a feat she shares with Kumar Sangakkara across men's and women's cricket combined.

Who has been appointed head coach of Canterbury men?
On the men's side, Brendon Donkers has been confirmed as head coach of Canterbury, the defending Plunket Shield champions. Donkers had been serving as assistant coach under Peter Fulton before Fulton departed midway through the previous season to take up the head coaching position at Middlesex.
Donkers stepped in as interim head coach following Fulton's exit and has now been given the role on a permanent basis. The back-to-back appointments across both the men's and women's programmes mark a clear shift in Canterbury's coaching structure as the region prepares for the new domestic season.
