Reports: Hardik Pandya's Gujarat Titans reunion blocked after all-rounder demands captaincy

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya's bid to move back to the Gujarat Titans (GT) has fallen through after the franchise refused to accept his condition of being handed the captaincy. Discussions between Pandya's camp and the franchise took place ahead of the IPL 2027 trading window, and the captaincy demand proved to be the point at which talks broke down.

Pandya's standing at Mumbai Indians has come under considerable scrutiny after a difficult IPL 2026 campaign. MI won only four of their 14 matches, finished ninth in the standings and saw the franchise go six seasons without a title. The squad's collective output was equally underwhelming: Ryan Rickelton finished 17th among run-getters and Allah Ghazanfar 14th among wicket-takers, with no MI player featuring in the serious reckoning for either the Orange Cap or the Purple Cap.

"The franchise was fine with him making a return. They had even discussed the same with its captain Shubman Gill, and he, too, had agreed that the franchise could trade him back. But when his condition of captaincy was put up, everyone said no to it," said a source as quoted by The Indian Express.

Pandya's spokesperson subsequently denied that the all-rounder had been involved in any direct discussions.

"Hardik Pandya had no direct conversation with any franchise whatsoever regarding transfer trade, or otherwise. If any approach has been made to him, that has been directed to the MI franchise," Pandya's spokesperson said.

Why did GT reject Hardik's captaincy condition?

Shubman Gill has become a central figure in Indian cricket's leadership structure. He captains India in Test cricket and has been given the ODI captaincy ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Asking the franchise to remove him from the same role at the club level was never a realistic proposition for the GT management.

The Gujarat-based franchise was prepared to assess a trade on cricketing grounds alone, but restoring the captaincy to Pandya would have required displacing a leader who holds that responsibility at both the franchise and national levels. Once that condition was placed on the table, the franchise's position was firm, and no further negotiations followed.

Pandya's journey across both franchises provides the backdrop to this situation. He was released by MI in 2022, joined GT and led them to the IPL title in their debut season. GT then finished runners-up in 2023. He subsequently moved back to MI ahead of the 2024 season, taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.

That first campaign ended with MI at the foot of the table and Pandya facing sustained hostility from supporters at home games. A modest improvement in 2025 offered some relief, but the 2026 season reversed much of that ground.
