India secured a thrilling five-wicket victory over West Indies in Match No. 52 of the T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, to book their place in the semi-finals. After being put in to bat, West Indies posted a formidable 195/4 in their 20 overs, courtesy of solid contributions throughout the batting order.

Shai Hope and Roston Chase laid a strong foundation with a 68-run opening partnership off 53 balls. While the runs kept flowing, wickets fell at regular intervals. Hope was bowled by Varun Chakravarthy, and Jasprit Bumrah turned the tide with a crucial over, dismissing Shimron Hetmyer for 27.

Chase added a steady 40, while Sherfane Rutherford managed 14 before edging Hardik Pandya. The late surge came from Rovman Powell and Jason Holder, who stitched together an unbeaten 76-run stand off just 35 balls for the fifth wicket. Powell smashed 34* off 19 deliveries, and Holder struck 37* off 22 to push West Indies close to the 200-run mark. Bumrah was India’s standout bowler with figures of 2/36, while Axar Patel bowled economically amid an otherwise expensive outing for the attack.

In response, India chased down the target in 19.2 overs, largely driven by a sensational knock from Sanju Samson. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan fell cheaply for 10 each, while Suryakumar Yadav scored 18. Tilak Varma contributed a brisk 27, including three consecutive boundaries, and Hardik Pandya chipped in with 17. However, it was Samson who stole the show with an unbeaten 97 off 50 balls, smashing 12 fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 194. Despite Jason Holder (2/38) and Shamar Joseph (2/42) attempting to apply pressure, India held their nerve.

India will now face England in the semi-final on March 5 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, while South Africa take on New Zealand in the first semi-final on March 4 at Eden Gardens.
