There is a reserve day in place for the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 to ensure that weather interruptions do not unfairly impact the outcome of crucial knockout matches. The 2026 edition, being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, has now reached its semi-final stage.

The four teams that have qualified are India, South Africa, New Zealand and England. The first semi-final will see South Africa take on New Zealand on March 4 at Eden Gardens, while India will face England in the second semi-final on March 5 at Wankhede Stadium.

Rain has already played a part in the tournament, including a washed-out Super Eight fixture between Pakistan and New Zealand that ended in a No Result, with both teams sharing points. However, the rules are different when it comes to knockout matches. To avoid a premature exit due to weather, both semi-finals and the final have designated reserve days.

When are the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals and reserve days scheduled?

If the first semi-final on March 4 is completely washed out, it will be played on March 5. Similarly, if the second semi-final scheduled for March 5 cannot be completed due to rain, it will move to March 6.

Match Scheduled Date Reserve Date Venue
South Africa vs New Zealand March 04, 2026 March 05, 2026 Eden Gardens, Kolkata
India vs England March 05, 2026 March 06, 2026 Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

How does the reserve day work in the T20 World Cup?

In cases where play begins on the scheduled day but is interrupted, the match will resume on the reserve day from the exact point of interruption. The runs scored, wickets lost and overs bowled will all carry forward, meaning the match will not restart from scratch. For a result to be declared in a T20 match, a minimum of 10 overs per side must be completed.

What happens if rain washes out a reserve day for the T20 World Cup semi-finals?

If no play is possible on both the scheduled day and the reserve day, the team that finished higher in the Super Eight standings will advance to the final.
